Technical & Engineering Manager

This is a Senior Management Role reporting to the General Manager. The Technical & Engineering Manager’s focus is three-fold:

  • Engineering: to set a direction for the execution of the division’s capital, Major Maintenance Expense & Infrastructure management plans to support core divisional goals, while ensuring compliance with codes, regulations and internal engineering standards,
  • Technical: ensure that the operations environmental performance meets or exceeds the regulatory requirements and to work with operations to ensure finished product quality meets or exceeds the expectations of customers at the lowest cost possible and,
  • Safety: champion safety and operational excellence of the team.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Mentorship and development of employees with a focus on succession planning
  • Establishment and management of Technical and Engineering budgets
  • Setting of strategic goals for investment, environmental compliance, quality, and safety
  • Know the safety policies and ensure that every individual in the department actively demonstrates an understanding and appreciation of the Divisional Safety Plan and WF safety policies and procedures
  • Managing performance by building a collaborative, respectful and supportive high performing team, as well as setting individual and team goals that align with the strategic goals of the organization
  • Empower the Engineering Superintendent to manage compliance with regulations and codes that apply to the division
  • Ensure that plans to invest new capital, maintenance expenditures and infrastructure meet divisional strategic goals
  • Empower the Environmental Supervisor and Technicians to effectively manage the environmental systems to ensure compliance with applicable regulations
  • Empower the Quality Assurance Supervisor to ensure that finished product testing is completed for the division and all lab-based QA/QC requirements are met
  • Empower the Process Engineering Superintendent to ensure that process engineers and specialists are working to improve present and future processes through trial work, optimization, data review and management and support of cost, quality, environment or safety priorities

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering and P Eng (or registration eligibility with EGBC) or a Bachelor’s degree in Science would be considered an asset.
  • 10-15 years of experience working in heavy industry, preferably in pulp mills in progressive supervisory roles
  • Excellent interpersonal and mentoring skills
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills
  • The ability to work independently as well as part of a team
  • Excellent skills in all forms of communication
  • The desire to progress, learn, grow, and see division succeed
