The Office of Diversity, Equity and Sustainability Initiatives (ODESI) at OCAD University is a collaborator in a federally funded project entitled Innovating for Inclusive and Equitable Post-Secondary Education: A Pathway to Realizing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Over three years, this project aims to close the knowledge and skills gap in Canada regarding inclusive approaches to universal design for learning, instructional excellence, and support for students with disabilities in post-secondary and identify indicators of decent work.

Led by Eviance, our community collaborators include: the Council of Canadians with Disabilities, National Educational Association of Disabled Students, ARCH Disability Law Centre, Ryerson University, and St. Francis Xavier University.

OCAD University will be hosting one of two National Social Labs (NSL) which will convene faculty, staff, administrators, students, researchers, and community members on unique approaches and solutions to supporting students with disabilities in post-secondary education.

In preparation for the National Social Lab, OCADU will be undertaking research on designing a roadmap for transformative organizational change by developing a human rights-based framework that can be applied across the post-secondary sector to address the persistent and ever-present educational barriers experienced by students with disabilities.

Responsibilities:

  • Support qualitative and quantitative research, analysis, and synthesis to achieve project objectives
  • Gather qualitative and quantitative information of local and national scope and summarize key themes
  • Conduct jurisdictional and environmental scans, literature reviews, reflexive
  • Journaling, expert interviews, data analysis, and policy analysis, working with & under supervision of Associate Professor Maya Mahgoub-Desai
  • Contributes to coding, cleaning, and organizing data
  • Assist with report writing
  • Support the development of clear and accessible communication materials
  • Assists in the graphic preparation of project information and statistics needed for proposals and presentation materials
  • Support the development of clear and accessible communication materials
  • The successful candidate will some receive in-service training on a variety of topics related to the project, including but not limited to: intersectionality, human rights, reflexivity, and literature reviews
  • Community or academic presentation of work with Project Team, as required
  • Involvement in completion of university ethics application
  • Involvement in planning of the National Social Lab

Qualifications:

Candidates should have:

  • A graduate degree, undergraduate degree or be currently enrolled in a relevant graduate program
  • At least one year of relevant experience supporting research or applied research
  • Strong research, analytical and creative problem-solving skills
  • Experience in gathering, synthesizing, and analyzing information from various sources
  • Knowledge of quantitative and qualitative research methods, e.g., literature reviews, jurisdictional scans
  • Experience designing and implementing quantitative and qualitative research projects, including survey and questionnaire design; focus group design, in a community-based setting
  • Strong writing skills and effective communication skills, including the ability to produce clear language reports
  • Computer proficiency, including the use of Microsoft Office and Google Suite of products
  • Knowledge/experience/skillset to conduct research on disability studies, universal design for learning, organizational change, human rights framework etc
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated commitment to the principles of equity and experience promoting a respectful work and learning environment for students, staff and faculty
  • Sound understanding of intersectionality and readiness to work in congruence with values of OCAD U

Hours of Work: 10 hours per week over the period of Monday, December 6, 2021 to Friday April, 29, 2022

Work Environment: The incumbent in this role will be expected to report to work on campus. Please review the for up-to-date information about OCAD U vaccination requirements. All OCAD University employees are required to be fully vaccinated as a condition of hire in accordance with OCAD U’s .

Compensation: $19.99 (Undergraduate Rate) /$31.68 (Graduate Rate) per hour, subject to qualifications, plus 6% in lieu of benefits plus vacation pay, as applicable, per the provisions of the Employment Standards Act

  • This appointment is conditional upon funding of the Project by OCAD U’s external funding partner(s)
  • The period of employment may be extended, conditional upon continued funding of the Project by OCAD U’s external funding partner(s), and upon satisfactory execution of duties.
  • Full-time graduate students may not accept research assistantships or other university-related employment in excess of 10 hours per week (or 130 hours per semester), as mandated by the Ontario Council of Graduate Studies (OCGS).
