Job description: The Flexible Packaging Buyer Planner responsibilities include purchasing and inventory control of labeled beverage can raw materials, materials requirement planning, and production scheduling of labeled beverage can manufacturing. The Buyer Planner is responsible for the planning and forecasting tasks related to packaging production and coordinates activities between customer service, suppliers, and production on all orders. The Buyer Planner is accountable for raw material on-time delivery, cost control, and product quality performance.

The Flexible Packaging Buyer Planner’s main objective is to support manufacturing operations with production efficiency through scheduling optimization and raw material control. Success is dependent on the individual’s ability to collaborate and influence internal stakeholders and external production partners.

PRINCIPAL ROLES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for buying and planning activities relating to on-time delivery, quality and cost of raw materials as well as preparing production schedules across multiple labeled beverage can manufacturing sites and North American supply sources.
  • Process and manage purchase orders through ERP.
  • Orders labels based on economic order quantities and standard costs; analyze purchase price variances.
  • Monitors and receives label deliveries to ensure on-time delivery for production requirements.
  • Follows up on outstanding purchase orders; adapts and internally communicates recovery plan.
  • Monitors inventory usage to ensure materials are available for production.
  • Schedules and facilitates regular production meetings to strengthen communication and resolve production and scheduling issues.
  • Commits to customer product availability dates for each order and communicates to customer service within agreed upon service level.
  • Works with operations to prepare sleeved can production schedules based on customer requirements, raw material availability and production capacity.
  • Works with operations and customer service to manage customer delivery date changes and exceptions.
  • Analyzes data and reports to derive insights and make recommendations to supply chain performance.
  • Provides monthly gap analysis for supplier delivery performance.
  • Monitors slow moving inventory and provides disposition instructions where applicable.
  • Provides timely escalation of raw material supply issues that impact overall customer and operations service goals.
  • Manages vendor cost card, product specifications, performance scorecards and service level agreements
  • Works with supplier and accounts payable team to resolve pricing and/or invoicing discrepancies.
  • Facilitates ERP product item creation and maintenance.
  • Facilitates raw material non-conformance investigations with suppliers & operations and manages product returns and credit pass through to accounting. Maintains case data records in Salesforce.com.
  • Prepares annual and monthly supplier forecasts.
  • Participate with new vendor qualification process.
  • Assist with sourcing for new product development initiatives.
  • Provides Can Purchasing back up support when required.
  • Ensure compliance with corporate policies, procedures, and standards.

MINIMUM EDUCATION & WORK REQUIREMENTS:

  • Demonstrate strong analytical and negotiating skills.
  • Experience with printing processes for consumer packaging such as shrink sleeve or pressure sensitive labels; flow or over wrap; pouching or sachets; container wraps or wrapping.
  • Effectively interact cross-functionally with internal stake-holders; assist customer service and operations with reaching departmental goals.
  • Ability to solve day-to-day scheduling and quality issues in collaboration with operations, customer service and suppliers.
  • Adapt to fluid situations and manage scheduling changes with custom made-to-order products.
  • Build and maintains strong supplier relationships.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills are highly valued in this role.
  • Ability to develop, adapt or recommend effective planning and scheduling tools.
  • Demonstrate superior planning skills and the ability to communicate with all levels of management.
  • Detail oriented, highly organized and thrives in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment.

  • Strong working knowledge of MS Office applications.
  • Must be proficient in Excel.
  • Experience working in ERP and MRP environments.
  • Possess a valid passport and be able to travel as required.
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • 2+ years experience working in a Supply Chain role within the flexible packaging industry. Production scheduling experience a definite asset.
  • Strong ERP system knowledge and proficient with Excel. Experience with MRP and scheduling systems.
