Job description: Our Research and Innovation department is looking for a Competency-Based Education and Assessment (CBEA) Consultant to join their dynamic team.

Working within the Research and Innovation department, the Competency-Based Education and Assessment (CBEA) Consultant serves as the key development resource and implementation expert for competency-based programming and assessment at Bow Valley College. This individual collaborates extensively with colleagues and stakeholders at multiple levels and across the college to provide both direct support and thought leadership to programs seeking to incorporate elements of CBE such as demonstrating mastery through multiple forms of assessment at a personalized pace, development of micro-credentials and accompanying digital badges, and especially the development of reliable and valid student assessment tools appropriate to specific subject matter and workplace practice.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Leads, supports, and collaborates toward, as appropriate, the development and assessment of CBE programming
  • Participate in faculty and staff development initiatives, such as the annual Ignite program and ongoing workshops on relevant teaching & learning topics, etc.
  • Keeps current with trends and research in the field through both formal and informal professional development activities
  • Participates on relevant committees or other cross-department initiatives related to CBE
  • Leads or participates in other emerging academic innovation or research projects as required.

Job Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree – Adult education, educational technology and/or curriculum development. A graduate degree in another field with extensive related experience would also be considered.
  • 7 years of relevant experience.
  • Strong track record of CBE program and assessment development in a post-secondary or formal workplace role.
  • Teaching experience in online and/or face-to-face learning environments.
  • Advanced technology user, including standard office applications and specialized learning technologies such as learning management systems, student information systems, web-conferencing, and content development tools.
  • Ability to travel
  • A combination of experience and education may be considered.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a post-secondary institution environment.
  • Previous consulting experience.
  • Experience in Competency-Based Education (CBT), or Technical & Vocational Education and Training (TVET) environments, including curriculum development and related assessments for workforce related projects.
  • Experience in developing and implementing competency-based assessment instruments, including familiarity with psychometric principles in student assessment.
  • General knowledge and skill in adult learning theory, online and distance learning, classroom instruction, instructional design, curriculum development, educational technology. Broad /deep/ specialized skills and knowledge related to the areas of their workload.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and teamwork skills.
  • Intermediate to advanced skills in the following computer applications: Learning Management Systems, Web Conferencing, Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Broad exposure to and familiarity with the use of learning technologies (e.g. SMART Boards, tablet/pen computing, document cameras, video conferencing, mobile devices, Web 2.0 tools, portable apps, social media, collaborative technologies).

This is a full-time, continuous Faculty position.
