The Role

Start Date: January 4, 2023
Preferred Work Term Length: 12 – 16 months
Preferred Education: Bachelors, Computer Science (or Related Disciplines)
Preferred year of study: 3rd or 4th year
Eligibility: Students must be enrolled in a formal co-op/internship program with their post-secondary institution OR Students must be returning to their post-secondary institution after this work term

We’re seeking a Computer Science Co-op Student to join our North American Long Lake Development Planning & Innovation Team. The preferred candidate will be based in Calgary, AB.
This is an exciting role with the potential for significant personal development, material contribution to CNOOC International and opportunities within a company with growth ambitions in North America. Responsibilities include:
- Optimization of Machine Learning Models: Work with engineering team to streamline data flow, diagnostics, and real-world application of machine learning models for Oil Sands well prediction to various decision scenarios. Adopt best practices from open-source libraries to enhance and operationalize workflows.
- Development of Custom Forecasting Tools: Help long-term effort to develop and improve code in custom-built forecasting tools to improve sustainability and interpretability. These tools are key to our business-critical processes. Apply team standards for clean coding and documentation to reduce technical debt.
- Optimization of Data Workflows: Work with stakeholders in technical subsurface teams along with IT and Tech Records to understand and then clean, streamline and optimize data workflows for efficient and sustainable application. Work with end-users to improve data interfacing & user experience.
- Day-to-Day Data Support: Work with geoscientists and engineers to support typical data challenges and improve the quality and efficiency of subsurface project delivery.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Support creation of reports, project updates and technical presentations to leaders, including for technical reviews.
- Cross-Team Collaboration: Work within an experienced multi-disciplinary team comprised of Development, Reservoir and Production Engineers, Geoscientists, and Data Scientists.
Who are we looking for?
We are interested in hearing from Computer Science students with the following background:
- Working towards a post-secondary degree or diploma in Computer Science or appropriate equivalent.

- Has extensive experience with the R programming language
- Has experience with git version control systems
- The following technical experience would be considered an asset:
- Oil & gas
- Python
- Data Engineering
- Business Intelligence Tools (Power BI / Spotfire)
- User Interface / User Experience (UI/UX)
- Continuous Integration / Continuous Deployment (CI/CD)
