Role

Are you a talented leader, scientist and communicator who supports their team to achieve excellence? Do you have experience with multi-stakeholder decision-making? Are you passionate about environmental monitoring and have a strong science background? The Oil Sands Monitoring (OSM) Branch seeks a leader who is comfortable operating in a complex and fast-paced work environment. While a strong understanding of environmental monitoring, as well as evaluation and reporting is required, developing networks, building relationships and solving problems are also key competencies important in this role.

As the successful candidate, you will enjoy an intellectually stimulating work environment and passionate, dedicated colleagues from government, Environmental Non-Governmental Organizations (ENGOs), industry and Indigenous communities in the oil sands region of Alberta. You would be a point of authority and trust for a team of technologists and scientists, and a catalyst for collaborative programs that involve cross-disciplinary partners and stakeholders.

Your specific responsibilities will include:

  • Providing scientific and technical leadership, direction, and management for a multi-disciplinary team within the OSM Branch.
  • Providing advice and recommendations on issues, trends, and challenges, and working as part of a leadership team to support the Executive Director and contribute to the achievement of branch and division goals
  • Contributing to the long-term vision and strategic plan for Alberta Environment and Parks-led environmental monitoring and science programs which includes design, evaluation, and reporting for the oil sands areas of Alberta.
  • Providing scientific leadership on field operations and guidance of office-based evaluation and reporting of the condition of environment, including surface water, groundwater, aquatic biota, terrestrial biodiversity and wetlands in collaboration with partners.
  • Providing leadership on innovative environmental science monitoring program design and research initiatives that inform or support executive management decisions, funding and policy direction as well as planning and operational decision-making
  • Proactively engaging and collaborating with both internal and external stakeholders, including liaising with the scientific community and those involved in citizen science and environmental stewardship efforts

Qualifications

Requirements:

  • A graduate degree in a science field related to environmental science, interdisciplinary studies or natural resource management.
  • 7 years of progressively responsible leadership and management experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in field operations related to environmental science.
  • A record of scientific publishing in the peer reviewed literature.

Related experience or education may be considered as an equivalency on a one for one basis.

Assets:

  • PhD in a related environmental science field with specific knowledge in one or more disciplines (e.g. water quality, biology, geochemistry, hydrology, hydrogeology, ecology).
  • Knowledge of international, national, provincial and local issues relevant to the condition of the environment, with emphasis on the oil sands region of Alberta
  • Experience collaborating with internal and external stakeholders within the energy and/or environmental sector, including supporting incorporation of western science, Indigenous knowledge, local knowledge, citizen science and community-based programs into environmental monitoring, evaluation and reporting
  • Familiarity with applicable environmental legislation such as Alberta’s Water Act, Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act, and the Alberta Land Stewardship Act.

Salary

$4,037.95 to $5,127.61 biweekly ($105,390 to $133,830 per year)

Hours of Work: 36.25 hours per week, Monday to Friday.
