Job Description:
The Director Marketing Planning & Strategy is a key position in the Global Brand & Marketing team requiring an experienced professional who has a proven track record in marketing planning and marketing strategy.
We are looking for a seasoned leader who will bring leading edge marketing planning, best practices and consistency in helping our business group marketing teams in Asia, the US and Canada in their creative development, production, execution and delivery of marketing programs to multiple client segments.
What will you do?
Reporting to the AVP Global Brand & Marketing, the Director is responsible for two primary objectives: the first is in helping the Global Marketing team advance the marketing discipline through holistic strategic annual planning as well as providing strategic marketing direction and consultation on marketing execution programs.
The second major goal is to leverage the marketing planning process to provide consultation and support to our business group marketing teams, to help them deliver on, measure, and surpass their marketing targets. The candidate will establish strategic media recommendations, implement performance metrics and share best practices relating to marketing strategy.
Accountabilities:
Marketing Planning
- Manage the overall annual planning process for the Global Marketing teams, driving alignment across Global Marketing and the business units in the planning process, timing, and quality of information. You deliver an annual marketing plan for Global Marketing as well as a rolled-up marketing plan for the broader Sun Life team, and you ensure the ongoing integrity of the planning process throughout the year.
- Support business group marketing leads in their annual planning ensuring there is alignment, cohesion, transparency, and holistic reporting across all plans.
- Engage with business group marketing teams on a quarterly basis to review progress to plan, gather learnings and participate in idea exchange to ensure mutual objectives are achieved. You report back on these discussions to ensure information is being leveraged strategically across businesses and marketing colleagues.
- Liaise with our colleagues in Corporate Strategy, you are responsible for making sure that all marketing strategies are cohesive and aligned to the Enterprise Planning process and related strategies.
- Manage our marketing investment strategy & media models, as well as tracking and sharing marketing best practices.
Marketing Strategy
- Support the AVP in developing strategies that advance marketing objectives for our colleagues in Global Marketing, as well as in the business groups. The director is also accountable for identifying strategic media opportunities, especially as they arise as part of the marketing planning process.
- Support the AVP with brand advertising campaigns across all mediums – you help define global creative platforms and manage the communications and advertising programs that support our brand promise and evolving value proposition of Sun Life.
- The director also supports our marketing colleagues within the business in their marketing campaigns to ensure brand and marketing best practice alignment.
- Manage our relationships with media and creative agencies and ensure program integration and satisfaction of key stakeholders at Sun Life.
- Provide a point of view on Campaign Performance reporting & analysis as it relates to key marketing campaigns running globally. You also report on successful campaign initiatives through case studies and capsule content that can readily be shared with colleagues across the business in a way that engages with impact and influence stakeholders and decision-makers across the SLF organization on how we are advancing the marketing discipline.
- Facilitate marketing rollouts: Leverage consumer insights to define strategy across multiple channels and ensure effective activation, review creative expression as well as internal marketing experience and oversee budget management of discrete campaigns.
- Responsible for global owned channels Social Media Governance & Activation; including global content creation for these channels, as well as ensuring our global sites have content for each of the digital screens to ensure a cohesive brand experience for employees worldwide.
What do you need to succeed?
- 8-10 years of advertising and/or marketing communications experience conceiving and managing programs.
- The ideal candidate will have a track record of progressive experience in advertising, branding and marketing.
- University degree in marketing or training equivalent
- Demonstrated ability to manage a team
- Expertise in the use of state-of-the-art technology for communicating effective marketing management and advertising.
- A track record of conceptualizing, implementing and managing an exciting vision and trend-setting strategy.
- Demonstrated ability to translate research results into effective strategies
- Your expertise is in driving marketing strategy discipline across many marketing teams. You thrive in a fast moving, matrixed, collaborative environment. You are results-oriented, highly motivated, hands-on and you inspire your team to develop and implement complex projects. You are flexible, with a “can do” attitude and you are passionate about -presenting marketing opportunities to senior executives.
- Your ability to think conceptually and creatively regarding marketing planning helps you deliver quality results within tight deadlines. You drive rigorous, fact-based marketing planning and strategy recommendations to senior management, while supporting alignment with stakeholders across the organization. Your ability to influence outside functional boundaries to achieve common goals helps you succeed.
- As a collaborative “hands-on” team leader and player, you build strong relationships. You are team oriented, diplomatic, flexible, with excellent presentation skills, including strong oral and writing capabilities and attention to detail.

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance. Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
