Job description: Some of what you will do:
The primary focus of the incumbent will be to ensure the accuracy, completeness and integrity of financial data and reporting for the Denis business unit. This includes instituting and maintaining internal controls and accounting policies, procedures and systems across the organization. The individual will oversee the period financial close, preparation of Denis’ financial results and the preparation of financial statements and reporting on a monthly / quarterly / annual basis in a timely and accurate fashion for submission to Staples. The ideal candidate possesses strong progressive accounting experience, is fully bilingual and has prior experience leading change through a business integration. This individual will be accustomed to dealing with a range of financial reporting and operating issues and be a strong technical resource for various internal and external stakeholders.
Specifically, you will:
- Day-to-day management of the Finance team, including:
- Financial accounting & reporting
- Billing and Collections / AR
- Accounts Payable and inventory
- Payroll
- Provide efficient and effective financial reporting for Denis Office Supplies and Furniture to Staples as part of a (targeted) 3-5 day close each month and answer any questions or queries related to the financial results. Oversees and provides quality control over the preparation of period financial statements and internal reports for accuracy and comparability of information
- Improve quality of financial reporting (e.g., improve close process efficiency and effectiveness / reduce timelines) on an ongoing basis
- Provide financial reporting / insight to local management team, including analysis of actual results vs. budget, forecast and estimates, etc.
- Support the standardization and alignment of accounting policies, procedures, and systems with Staples as part of the integration plan.
- Institutes and maintain internal control procedures and financial accountability, including a robust compliance function
- Develop and monitor compliance with all financial policies, including DoA at all locations by working in partnership with local operations / leadership team.
- Automate / streamline routine processes and activities
- Provide leadership coaching and management over a team of ~10 staff, including 2 remote staff in Moncton & Halifax
- Manage external audits of financial statements and audits by provincial and federal tax authorities
Qualifications
Some of what you need:
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Commerce or Business Administration with CPA, CA/CGA/CMA or equivalent designation
Experience:
- A minimum of 8+ years of experience in finance and accounting in a controllership setting
- Five years of management experience with a team of reports
Knowledge:
- Ability to work effectively in a dynamic environment and manage competing priorities
- Advanced knowledge and understanding of MS Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel). Highly developed excel

- Strong understanding of Finance transactional and reporting processes, with proven expertise in
- continuous improvement
- Analytical, detail oriented, team player
- A proven ability to build strong business relationships beyond the finance team
- Demonstrated understanding and acceptance for responsibility of confidentiality
- Proficiency and aptitude to working with large EFP systems, preferably Oracle and/or BBX
- Fully bilingual – able to communicate both written / verbally in English / French in a business context
- Strong understanding and experience with complex accounting, internal controls, financial systems, and
- processes.
- Prior experience in finance function integrations would be an asset
- Being bilingual is an asset – Communication may be required with Staples head office associates or customers who reside outside of Quebec
