Job Description
Canam currently has an opportunity for a permanent full-time, Electrician / PLC Technician at our steel joist and deck manufacturing plant in Calgary.
As a member of our maintenance team, you will:
- Promote and demonstrate constant safety behaviour
- Be responsible for repair and maintenance of production equipment and facilities, including bridge cranes up to 25 ton capacity
- Be involved in a variety of activities, including but not limited to: equipment calibration, troubleshooting, and preventive maintenance
- Perform repairs and installations of hydraulic, pneumatic and mechanical systems
- Demonstrate punctuality, maturity, reliability, and work well under pressure
- Install and maintain programmable hardware and software within the electrical department
- Maintain existing systems and PLC-based automated equipment
- Diagnose and repair malfunctioning PLC-based automated equipment
- Possess the ability to work shift work; previous experience working shifts and weekends would be an asset
- Perform all other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Aptitude to ensure compliance of safe work practices and health and safety policies and procedures
- Journeyman Electrician certificate and PLC knowledge; college diploma in industrial electronics, instrumentation and automation or equivalent experience
- Overhead crane maintenance experience preferred
- A keen aptitude for diagnosing and correcting electrical problems
- A minimum of three (3) years’ experience, preferably in the manufacturing industry
- Sound communication and English language skills (reading and writing)
- Physical fitness to lift up to 40 lbs. on a continual basis
- The ability to multitask efficiently, with marginal supervision, while remaining highly self-motivated with a service-oriented approach
- A friendly, patient, team-oriented work ethic and a strong commitment to organizational values
- Lean or continuous improvement experience, an asset
- Accurate record keeping, and generating log books
- Good comprehension of the Canadian Electrical Code
- Ability to create and read electrical/electronic plans and symbols
- Troubleshoot/repair: computer-assisted electrical / electronic systems / programmable logic controllers
- Install electrical and electronic controls on machines
- Start up complex electronic and electrical systems
- Demonstrated knowledge of:
- Distributed I/O and control networks (devicenet, controlnet, ethernet, etc.)
- Electro-hydraulic and electro-pneumatic components
- Electronic components (such as Control and Instrumentation principles and function)
- Closed-loop servo-systems (encoders, AC Drive, PLC, Servomotors, etc.)
- Mathematics (trigonometry and algebra) and electricity
- Allen-Bradley (Logix Family) and Omron PLC hardware and programming software (Rockwell RS Logix 500 & 5000, Omron CX, Syswin)
Additional Information
Physical Demands:
The ability to stand continuously is essential with frequent walking and occasional sitting. The nature of the position will require the employee to perform a wide range of physical activities ranging from pushing and pulling, lifting and carrying heavy objects (60 – 100 lbs.) to climbing, crouching, kneeling, bending and handling. Vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to focus.
Work Environment:
Working safely is a condition of employment at Canam. Constant exposure to a steel fabrication environment and regular exposure to weather conditions, excessive noise levels and vibrations. Often works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to fumes and airborne particles. Occasionally works in high, precarious positions. Potential burn hazards such as: UV light radiation, open flames, sparks and other sources. Noise levels in the work environment will require the use of appropriate hearing protection. The correct usage of PPE will be required at all times.
This position requires you to work rotating day/evening/weekend shifts.
