Morrison Hershfield is currently seeking an experienced professional to lead our business operations in building engineering and building science in Western Canada. Our buildings practice in Alberta and BC includes expertise in all core building systems (structural, mechanical, electrical) as well as our specialty buildings practice which building science, enclosure design, energy, durability and sustainability. This position is to provide operational leadership for our specialty buildings practice. The successful candidate will be responsible for executing our strategic plan and meeting our business plan objectives. This position reports to the Senior Vice President, Building Specialty Services business unit.
Responsibilities include operational leadership and oversight of the business to achieve business plan objectives and to realize the company strategic plan. Coach, mentor and develop department managers and team leads, set priorities for optimizing the efficiency of operations, developing teams and employees, and enhancing our market position. This individual will also provide oversight of department operations including financial management, project delivery, sales, technical development and resource management. Having a strong business acumen and vision this individual will build the MH brand both internally and externally, enhance employee engagement and build exceptional client relationships.
Responsibilities:
Business
Champion MH strategic vision through communication, team building, and engagement and alignment to company goals and objectives. Build the MH brand.
Build and maintain strong working relationships with other key leaders in Business Units and Service Units both in Western Canada and in other regions.
Conduct regular strategy meetings (SWOT, market trends, gap analysis, competition, etc.). Identify key objectives for the Group, aligned with Business Unit overarching objectives, on a yearly basis.
Prepare business plan by projecting net revenue, number of hires, productivity, expenses and profitability. Identify possible capital expenditures.
Provide general oversight for business development, project delivery, and technical leadership and oversight within area of expertise.
Lead, guide and provide oversight to ensure quality requirements and expectations meet our quality management system (MHMS).
Ensure Departments, managers and employees are following MH Health Safety and Environment policies and procedures.
Identify champions which will lead a specific market or service area locally and connect them with practice leads or service area manager as appropriate.
Analyze business risk and provide solutions.
Maximize benefit of non-production hours by setting goals and objectives for business development, technical development and training.
Disseminate various communications to Departments and employees, including business plan objectives, strategic direction, change imperatives, etc.
Empower staff to grow the business through expanded client relationship and/or new line of work.
Provide leadership and assist Department Managers, Team Leads, Project Managers and other staff in the development of innovative solutions.
Encourage staff to network, present at conferences and write technical papers to promote MH visibility and technical preeminence.
Financials
Monitor Group and Department financial performance on all key indicators including Sales, Revenue, productivity, contribution, AR, WIP and others). Identify areas for improvement and actions to address. Resolve issues as they arise.
Support and assist Department Managers and Team Leads in project financial review, revenue recognition, invoicing and issue resolution. Take appropriate action to mitigate impacts.
Maximize utilization, productivity and operational efficiency by engaging and motivating teams to strive for excellence and to achieve and exceed objectives and targets.
Review Group and Department financial results monthly. Prepare monthly report for the Business Unit Leader.
Ensure efforts are taken to monitor and manage operating costs.
Work with Department Manager, Project Manager, and/or VP as appropriate to set fees for proposals.
Work with Department Managers and project/client managers to gain new business and maintain a healthy backlog.
Ensure balance of effort at Department level is achieved between Business Development, proposal writing, project delivery, technical development and other non-chargeable activities, to ensure long term financial success.
People
Set expectations for staff performance.
Provide regular oversight and direction to team members.
Encourage staff to develop by mentoring them and offering them opportunities that will challenge them.
Provide oversight and guidance to Department Managers and Team Leads in employee management, performance review, goal setting and career development.
Listen and respond to staff needs and handle staff conflicts with the assistance of HR.
Work with Department Managers to identify recruiting needs, employee search, interview and on-boarding.
Organize (and chair) regular team meetings to discuss operational objectives, performance against business plan objectives, workload, H&S, operational issues, etc.
Provide insightful and enthusiastic leadership creating a positive attitude and team spirit.
Qualifications:
Bachelors degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Architecture or related field.
Registered P.Eng. license is required.
Minimum 15 years of relevant experience in consulting and minimum 10 years of experience managing professional staff.
Demonstrated leadership to motivate and maximize individual performance.
Excellent written and communication skills in English.
Experience dealing with clients and top-level management.
Strong business acumen and vision.
Ability to set goals and manage priorities.
Experience in Building Science and/or experience with building enclosures for new construction and experience with building rehabilitation and restoration preferred.
Proficient in relevant software applications.
