With a portfolio of more than 4,500 crossings around the world, we’ve delivered landmark bridges that carry pedestrians, roads, railways, and pipelines. We are looking for a strong Field Engineer to join our team of experts on the Kicking Horse Canyon Phase 4 project and as we expand our team in British Columbia. In this role, you will have the opportunity to work with a broad variety of concrete and steel bridges and related structures such as retaining walls, rock fall attenuation systems, hydraulic structures, culverts and other various elements related to highway construction. You would be supporting the Bridge and structures design projects throughout British Columbia with a current focus on the Kicking Horse Canyon project. This position requires a solid track record of executing field reviews for bridges and structures delivered through design-bid-build and design-build projects and requires familiarity BC Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure and/or Municipal standards and project delivery.
POSITION OVERVIEW:
With minimal supervision, independently performs all aspects of field engineering assignments including development of plans, schedules, contracts, procedures, and construction methods and systems for an assigned project, or a designated area of a large project. Performs difficult and complex field engineering assignments related to self-performed design-build heavy civil infrastructure projects including highways, bridges, and related structures. The engineer at this level demonstrates expertise in applying engineering theories and general industry practices to resolve difficult problems encountered in the field. Provides leadership and functional guidance to lower-level technical personnel. Willingness to relocate to construction site locations is expected.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
Collaborates with field superintendents and construction management for the completion of difficult field engineering assignments involving the development, execution, erection and coordination of complex construction activities. Provides technical evaluation of work in progress and resolution of constructability issues.
Maintains first-level quality assurance to confirm that the installation of all work within his/her discipline is in accordance with the plans, specifications, and industry standards. Supervises the construction engineering work and provide technical expertise for one or more of the construction engineering disciplines, as well as survey personnel.
Reviews and interprets design drawings and specifications to ensure current revision level and feasibility to perform technical execution of work. Provides resolution for difficult and/or complex technical engineering problems across disciplines and coordinates application of solutions.
Review and comment on shop drawing submittals and collaborating with the Engineers of Record.
Provides technical guidance to site personnel regarding installations while working with a variety of Engineers of Record. Ensures that all work within his/her assigned scope of responsibility is installed in accordance with plans, specifications, and industry and quality standards. This includes ensuring that all tests and inspections are performed, witnessed, and documented in accordance with approved procedures.
Collaborates with construction management to eliminate any hazards associated with the work that may adversely affect the environment or the safety or health of employees. Ensures that personnel of the assigned group engage in safe work practices in compliance with site-specific safety procedures and industry standards.

Estimating: Review and analyze data relative to the project, complete plans and specification reviews for projects, assist with preparation of a bid.
Monitors construction schedules and assists in progress appraisal. Provides schedule and progress appraisal data to engineering and construction management.
Monitors material procurement and deliveries to ensure timeliness in support of construction activities and schedule.
Maintains a daily log for permanent record of project construction, as well as engineering data for the final project turnover and report. Initiates and maintains records, back-charge procedures, progress reports, etc., as required.
Maintains construction technical catalogs, supplier data, and other literature pertaining to the project.
Develops discipline construction schedules and monitors progress. Provides schedule and progress appraisal report to the project specific Construction Manager.
Establishes and maintains liaison with the discipline design engineering staff. Reviews and interprets discipline design drawings and specifications to ensure current revision level and correct technical execution of the work.
Interfaces with the client and upper-level management.
Performs other responsibilities associated with this position as may be appropriate.
Additional Details
- Heavy civil project experience.
- Experience with or understanding of underwater construction means and methods and inspection requirements.
- Adept at reviewing safety plans, construction plans, project schedules, and engineering drawings.
- Demonstrated ability to support multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
- Must be an excellent communicator with strong emotional intelligence in order to function as a seamlessly integrated team member in a matrixed owner’s environment consisting of both employee, JV partners and subconsultant staff.
- Ability to effectively use MS Office computer software and familiarity with industry standard project management tools to manage cost and schedule as required on a project by project basis.
- Must be willing and able to travel
- Position is available to be centered out of Burnaby, Kamloops or Kelowna.
- Must have reliable transportation and a valid BC driver’s license.
- Must be registered or able to become registered with Engineers and Geoscientists BC as a Professional Engineer.
- May be occasionally required to travel out-of-Province.

PREFERRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
4-year degree in a related engineering discipline is required. Typically incumbents have at least 5+ years of related experience at a field construction site on self-performed design-build projects. Experience in the construction of large civil/structural and/or industrial projects at locations within British Columbia is preferred.
SKILLS/COMPETENCIES:
Requires a proficiency in engineering and construction-related processes, as well as industry practices. Also requires excellent written and oral communication skills, as well as demonstrated leadership skills. In addition, familiarity with CAD and other software packages typically associated with engineering and construction is required, and the proven ability for performing in a lead capacity on a project.
