Job description: The Opportunity
McElhanney Ltd. is looking for a GIS Specialist to join our Project Automation Division. Reporting to our Division Manager, you will be responsible for maintaining and developing on top of our existing GIS centric systems but will also play a pivotal role in achieving McElhanney’s goal of mitigating digital disruption by helping projects deliver through the development and creation of new spatial and non-spatial digital offerings that are marketed and sold through “As a Service” revenue models.
Consideration may be given for the successful individual to work from any of our local McElhanney offices.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Work towards the achievement of the company vision statement.
- Perform data editing, compilation and conversion activities using FME (desktop and server) and ESRI (desktop and enterprise) technologies as well as maintenance and cleanup operations for GIS systems following pre-determined procedures. Integrate external software with GIS software.
- Responsible for full stack web developments that create platforms and digital offerings which leverage loosely coupled web services from both proprietary (using ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS for Server, Python and ESRI’s JavaScript API) and open sources libraries
- Responsible for database design, management and maintenance
- Manage McElhanney’s technical server infrastructure (SQL Server Spatial, ArcGIS Online, FME Server)
- Develop, implement, and maintain data standards, quality control procedures and guidelines for the conversion, attributing and displaying and consumption of data. Establish, document, and enforce data standards and procedures
- Provide a custodial role for technology automations and data residing within the base system. Work with external organizations on data transfer and systems compatibility issues
- Train and provide technical support for users and manage summer student data cleanup/compilation projects
- Maintain knowledge in the field of Geomatics and Information Technology by monitoring trade publications, professional associations and actively participating in professional organizations
- Comply with all company policies including safety policies and WCB regulations
- Perform other duties as required
What You’ll Bring
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Sciences, Computer Engineering, Geography or related field, with a specialization in GIS, and a minimum 5 years equivalent experience and education
- Proficiency with ArcGIS (desktop and enterprise), FME (desktop and server), and Microsoft SQL Server Spatial
- Proficiency with python programming language and the arcpy module.
- Proficiency with Windows PowerShell scripting for server software management tasks
- Proficiency with Open-Source development libraries (e.g. leaflet, GDAL, etc.)
- Proficiency with database maintenance and tuning (SQL Server)
- Full stack web development skills (HTML5, CSS, JavaScript, Node.js, Express.js, React.js, GIT, NPM) using responsive development principles
- Working knowledge of point cloud data classification and processing, Pix4D, AutoCAD Civil3D, Trimble Business Centre and Global Mapper considered an asset
- Working knowledge of ESRI’s JavaScript API considered an asset
- Extended knowledge and understanding of coordinate systems, transformations, survey methodologies, provincial base mapping, land use, and resource inventory data
- Use independent judgement to meet goals and objectives under tight deadlines and demanding workload
