Job Summary The NAV CANADA Pension Plan is a defined benefit pension plan with approximately 9000 members and $7 billion in assets invested across the spectrum of asset classes include public and private equity, fixed income, real estate, infrastructure, private debt and hedge funds. We have an exciting new opportunity for an Investment Analyst to join our highly engaged and innovative Pension Investment team. Our team is a small group of professionals who believe in the importance of retirement security and work closely together to ensure the plan is invested appropriately to meet our short- and long-term objectives.
The Investment Analyst will report to the Manager, Pension Investments and be actively involved in supporting all aspects of the investment process. From performance monitoring and risk management to research & due diligence for prospective investments as well as trading, this role offers the opportunity to be an active and valuable member of the Pension Investment team.
Job Description
Key Accountabilities:
Portfolio Management and Monitoring
- Support senior team members in monitoring external investment managers by attending conference calls / meetings with managers and reviewing monthly and quarterly reports. Review and confirm investment manager compliance with existing agreements.
- Monitor industry trends and valuations across all asset classes and conduct special research projects as needed.
- Monitor the Fund’s foreign exchange exposures and counterparty exposures and execute FX spot and forward trades as needed.
- Monitor the Fund’s cash management to ensure liquidity is maintained for capital calls, plan expenses and benefit payments.
Performance and Risk Analytics
- Conduct monthly / quarterly performance calculations and ongoing reconciliations between external manager reports, custodian reports and internal calculations.
- Produce quarterly analysis including the aggregation of data by asset class, region, and sector, as well as performance benchmarking, to bring meaningful insights to the team.
- Assist in monitoring key investment risks of public or private investments and total Fund level metrics by gathering data through various sources.
- Act as primary liaison with the Fund’s custodian regarding the completeness and accuracy of custodial performance and risk records.
Investment Process and Internal Initiatives
- Assist senior team members with the due diligence process and evaluation of prospective investments including valuation, market trends, and key investment merits and risks.
- Contribute to progressing due diligence work streams and onboarding of new managers (including administrative, operational, and legal documentation).
- Coordinate and prepare periodic reporting for senior management and the Pension Committee including performance summaries and written commentary on the macro-economic environment.
- Maintain internal databases and reports and assist with the development and enhancement of analytical and monitoring tools.
Education
- Bachelors’ degree in Business, Mathematics, Economics, or a related field of study.
- Enrolled in or demonstrated interest in enrolling in the CFA charterholder program or CAIA designation.
Experience
- 3-5 years of relevant professional experience in the finance industry, preferably in the pension/institutional investment context.
Knowledge
- Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite especially Excel/VBA.
- Knowledge of performance measurement techniques as it pertains to return and risk of investment portfolios.
- Knowledge of performance attribution techniques as it relates to asset allocation and portfolio construction.
Abilities
- The ability to work in a sophisticated technological environment, using tools such as spreadsheets, databases, and Bloomberg.
- Excellent financial analytical and modelling skills including various valuation techniques and capital structure analysis.
- Strong communication and presentation skills.
- The ability to work collaboratively in a small team setting or independently with solid organization skills.

Working conditions
- The Pension Investment team is working in a ‘hybrid’ model, with some remote work as well as collaborating in person at head office approximately 3 days per week. Alternate work arrangements will be considered under NAV CANADA’s Flexible Work Policy.
- Some travel may be required
