Job description: We currently have a Regular Full-time opportunity for a Manager, Grants & Awards in the Research Finance at our Bayview Campus.

Hours of Work: Weekdays: Monday-Friday; Days; 8 hrs; As per schedule

Summary of Duties

Reporting to the Executive Director of Research Operations and Finance, you will oversee all financial aspects of post-award activities related to research grants and awards from granting agencies in Canada and internationally, clinical trial activities and other research funding.

  • Lead and coach a team of approximately 10 finance professionals, promote a collaborative team environment and ensure performance objectives are met
  • Build effective and collaborative relationships with Principal Investigators (PI) and their research teams to ensure successful completion of their grant activities within the scope of granting agency’s award
  • Ensure internal management reporting adequately supports PIs with their financial responsibilities including educating them in financial administration and compliance to support research leadership
  • Responsible for quarterly grant overview by PI to ensure financial sustainability and address identified issues
  • Forge business partnership with facility managers and respective PIs to maximize revenues, recover costs and attract external customers
  • Ensure general accounting activities related to grants and contracts are recorded accurately and timely
  • Ensure grant activities and reporting to granting agencies are completed and submitted in compliance with the specific policy and program guidelines of the agency
  • Lead the financial development and implementation of Sponsored Research Agreements
  • Focus on ongoing improvements and streamlining of existing grant processes, policies and procedures
  • Oversee required grant audits (example Annual US Uniform Guidance audit, CFI and ORF audits as required)
  • Ensure all external annual audit requests, reports and questions are adequately addressed on a timely basis
  • Oversee the preparation and submission of institutional financial reports as required
  • Valued member of the SHSC finance organization and work closely with applicable SHSC financial departments
  • Collaborate with Manager, Financial Planning & Reporting on staffing needs, management and development
  • Oversee grant activities and reporting for the Sunnybrook Research Academy (SRA) as required
  • Manage other adhoc requests as required

Qualifications/Skills

  • Canadian Accounting Designation (CA/CMA/CGA or equivalent) required
  • Minimum 5 years staff supervisory experience – developing and leading staff is critical to the success of the employee in this role
  • At least 5 years of related experience preferably in a research environment
  • For profit business experience will be an asset
  • The ability to motivate and influence the actions of others
  • Strong knowledge of accounting concepts and generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and fund accounting principles.
  • Advanced understanding of grant accounting, federal and provincial funding agency rules and reporting requirements
  • Ability to prioritize work in response to multiple demands in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent planning, organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Display initiative and leadership when working in a complex reporting structure while meeting deadlines
  • Ability to extract key information and deliverables through the analysis and review of financial data
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with a strong customer centric approach
  • Demonstrated competence with the Microsoft office suite of products (Word, Excel and Access)
  • Familiarity with SAP and grant management database would be an asset.
