About Our Opportunity

Reporting to the Chief Clerk of the House of Assembly, the Manager of Hansard and Editor of Debates oversees the Hansard division of the Nova Scotia House of Assembly is accountable for the compilation of a complete, accurate and timely production of the verbatim records of the debates and proceedings of the House of Assembly, its various Standing, Select and Special Committees, and the House of Assembly Management Commission.

Primary Accountabilities

Primary accountabilities in this role include:

  • Compiling the debates of the proceedings of the House of Assembly (Hansard), the Committee of the Whole House on Supply, and the Subcommittee of the Whole House on Supply for posting to the internet and printing within a strict guideline.
  • Compiling the proceedings of the committees of the House as maybe required, both when the House is sitting and between sittings, as well as select and special committees as mandated by the House.
  • Managing the day-to-day operations of the Hansard Office.
  • Reviewing and responding to requests for research, assistance, and documents from members and staff of the House of Assembly; caucus staff; federal, provincial, and municipal governments; university professors and graduate students; and members of the public.
  • Making final editorial changes for incorporation in the final copy and compiling the daily index before submission to the Queen’s Printer for reproduction.
  • Ensuring the production of Hansard is maintained so the debates of the House of Assembly are issued on the same day on the internet and in print form within 24 hours.

Qualifications and Experience

This may be the right opportunity for you if you have a Bachelor’s degree or diploma program (in a relevant discipline) and/or related field experience combined with specialized knowledge as it relates to legislative proceedings and terminology and Hansard production techniques. An acceptable combination of training and experience may be considered.

The successful candidate must be non-partisan.

As the ideal candidate you have excellent management skills and techniques (e.g. planning, organizing, integrating, directing, and controlling) and the ability to apply them; excellent leadership skills and interpersonal abilities; judgement, tact and diplomacy.

You possess an exceptional understanding of English along with demonstrated knowledge and experience in document editing and production/transcription techniques. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly MS Word, is required.

You also exercise considerable initiative and have the ability to work in a high stress environment while meeting strict deadlines and maintaining high quality standards.

While not required, it is an considered as asset if you have:

  • Experience working in a parliamentary environment, and familiarity with legislative procedures and terminology, as well as supervisory experience.
  • Knowledge of SLIQ, html and web‐editing techniques, and web/digital publishing.

Working Conditions

This position requires considerable flexibility with regard to hours of work – flexible hours, evening shifts and or overtime will be required when the House is sitting.

Pay Grade: EC 11

Salary Range: $3,062.13 – $3,836.49 Bi-Weekly
