THE EMPLOYER

Memorial University (MUN) is a comprehensive, multi-campus, public university committed to excellence. The Fisheries and Marine Institute (MI) is MUN’s oceans and polytechnic campus, having locations in St. John’s, Foxtrap, Holyrood, Lewisporte and Stephenville with a budget of approximately $55 million and approximately 400 employees. MI is considered the most comprehensive institution of its kind in North America, with highly qualified employees and unique facilities such as full-motion ships bridge simulators and the world’s largest flume tank. THE BACKGROUND

The Launch is the Marine Institute’s portal to the ocean and base of marine operations, designed to support at-sea education, training and research in the areas of ocean science and technology, ocean safety, fisheries and the marine environment. Located in Holyrood, NL, the facility is the principal launch point for ocean-based programming and research deployments for the MI as well as other parts of MUN. The facility’s water lot is currently being developed to include subsea infrastructure and equipment that will allow the facility to become a controlled, calibrated and carefully benchmarked technology development and testing environment, that will support the evaluation and development of next-generation ocean technologies, autonomous systems, remote operations, digitalization and will form the basis for enhanced ocean vehicle training and research.

THE OPPORTUNITY

MI has been awarded funding through the Government of NL’s Offshore Oil and Gas Industry Recovery Assistance Fund to support the further development of its Subsea Centre of Excellence. This work will allow operators to improve environmental safety by providing training and research opportunities that simulate the North Atlantic operating environment and through collaborations and partnerships with provincial, national, and international ocean sectors, will result in a state-of-the-art training and testing facility to support safe and sustainable operations in and on the ocean.

DUTIES

Reporting to the Director of The Launch and in coordination with the Manager of Marketing and Communications, the successful applicant will be responsible for assisting in the development and implementation of business development and communications strategies for the Subsea Centre of Excellence, as well as additional complementary infrastructure and resources at The Launch. Duties include liaising and building relationships with various internal and external stakeholders; developing and implementing internal and external research business communications strategies to support such networks; assisting in the planning and marketing of major campaigns and events; evaluating marketing activities and performing necessary follow-up and performing other related duties as required. Flexibility regarding work hours, including occasional evening and weekend work, is required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Considerable experience (3-5 years) in a business development role; graduation from a four-year college or university with a degree in business, marketing, or engineering; or any equivalent combination of experience and training. The ideal candidate will have strong leadership and planning skills and a demonstrated ability to build a rapport with business and community leaders, members of professional organizations, and government representatives. Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills are required, along with a knowledge of digital and traditional marketing, social media platforms, and project management. The candidate must have the ability to engage and motivate people and have a high level of energy and initiative. Ability to work independently and as a team player; knowledge of the oceans or marine sectors is considered a strong asset. Compliance with Memorial’s Procedure for Vaccination Requirement (COVID – 19) is a condition of employment.

SALARY: $46,754 to $65,564 per annum (NAPE Local 7850)
