AHS is seeking a Nurse Practitioner (NP) – Adult to join the dynamic Cardiology team based out of the Peter Lougheed Centre (PLC). This casual position will provide frontline clinical care to patients with congenital heart disease and complex cardiac conditions within an acute care outpatient setting. The NP will collaborate with the Cardiology Team, unit based nursing staff and leaders, allied health team members, subspecialists and PLC administration in providing comprehensive, holistic and patient-family centred care. The NP will contribute to collaborative inter-professional patient care through advanced clinical practice, leadership, consultations, referrals, education and research. As the NP you will manage patients admitted to the Cardiology Service and liaise with the outpatient clinic nurses, pharmacists, social workers, Physicians and other allied health staff to ensure seamless transfers into and out of hospital and to ensure excellent inpatient care of this complex, high needs, patient group. In addition, you will provide nursing education and leadership locally, provincially and nationally, and will be involved in ongoing quality improvement initiatives and program development related to cardiology and congenital heart disease patients. The NP requires strong interpersonal skills and ability to build collaborative and trusting relationships with staff, the management team, physicians and all members of the interdisciplinary team and will demonstrate skills in the areas of organization, critical thinking, conflict resolution, advanced problem solving, interdisciplinary leadership and change management. A passion for caring for patients with medical complexity, and their families, is essential.
Description:
The Cardiology Nurse Practitioner is a self-directed advanced practice nurse who is prepared at the graduate level and functions in a collaborative practice model. The Cardiology NP demonstrates comprehensive knowledge in the area of medical and surgical critical care as well as the diagnosis and differential diagnosis, advanced assessment skills and treatment surrounding patients as part of the Cardiology and Critical Care team. The Cardiology NP role integrates aspects of nursing and medicine to coordinate the care of cardiology patients. Collaboration between these two disciplines is a key component of the Cardiology NP role and utilizing the interdisciplinary team is vital to providing comprehensive care to patients. Providing access to care is a key function of the Cardiology NP role. Direct care is provided through application of knowledge in advanced assessment skills, pathophysiology, pharmacotherapeutics, and applicable interventions. These capabilities support the development of differential diagnoses and need for further interventions. The role of the Cardiology NP will help provide continuity of care to more complex patients and provides continuity as part of the interdisciplinary team to patients and their families. This role also includes time for participation in relevant research and education. Education for bedside Registered Nurses (RNs) and rotating medical residents is a component of this NP role.

Required Qualifications:
Completion of a Master’s Degree in Nursing – Nurse Practitioner Program (Adult). Active or eligible for registration as a Nurse Practitioner with the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support – Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).
Additional Required Qualifications:
Minimum 5 years acute care cardiology experience as a RN within the last 7 years. Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification (ACLS).
Preferred Qualifications:
Nurse Practitioner experience in cardiology. Experience working with congenital heart disease patients within the last 5 years. Experience with the development and/or implementation of evidence based practice. Experience with program development. AHS AIW and/or AHS PROSCI certification (or equivalent). Completion of leadership related courses within last 3 years. Progressive nursing leadership experience within last 3 years. CCN(C) Certification. Microsoft Office Suite knowledge.
