Position Summary
Under the supervision and reporting directly to the Director of Education and as a member of the STC Pathways to Education team, the Pathways to Education Student Parent Worker is responsible for building relationships with students and families in the STC Pathways to Education after school program. You will work closely with the Pathways to Education team to ensure the identification of challenges facing students and that parents/guardians are registered with the Pathway’s program. You will provide ongoing communication, advocacy and programming among students and parents/guardian’s that provides understanding of the secondary school system and their capacities to successfully engage secondary school teachers and administrators to support the achievement of the youth in the program.
Responsibilities
- Provide support and guidance to students and families in the Pathways to Education after school program;
- Monitor each student’s progress and maintain required documentation;
- Provide advocacy and academic counselling support as required;
- Provide referrals to other support services and agencies as required;
- Manage the processing and approvals for financial incentives for students;
- Develop supportive relationships with students and maintain regular contact with parents;
- Develop and maintain effective working relationships with school staff;
- Work collaboratively with Pathways school site team to deliver after school program and provide support for special events and programs;
- Other duties as assigned that may align within the position.
Education and Experience
- Post-Secondary credentials in education or other human services related discipline;
- Three years’ experience in youth programming, education, or social work;
- Must have experience in community development, justice/social services, and group processes;
Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
- Excellent communications, facilitation, reporting and technological skills;
- Knowledge of elementary, secondary and post-secondary educational systems, school policies and programs, particularly in the Saskatoon Public Schools and Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools divisions;
- Understanding of adolescent/youth development strategies and programming;
- Knowledge on history of Indigenous peoples in Canada; community/social issues from systemic perspective; practices/understands Indigenous cultural protocols of diverse nations;
- Ability to build and maintain partnerships and work in a team environment;
- Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook and PowerPoint and experience working with databases.
- Ability to speak Cree, Saulteaux or Dakota is an asset;
- Knowledge of the political, social and economic objectives of the Saskatoon Tribal Council and of the Dakota, Cree, and Saulteaux cultures will be considered an asset.
Other Conditions:
- Must possess a valid Saskatchewan driver’s license and meet STC’s insurance requirements;
- Must provide a current, original, Canadian Criminal Record Check (CPIC) and vulnerable sector check as a condition of employment;
- Ability to work flexible hours; may include evenings and/or weekends.
