Job description: ERM is seeking a motivated Principal Consultant, Capital Project Delivery to join our Mining team at one of our offices across Canada . This is an opportunity to utilize your established relationships with companies and consulting experience to provide technical leadership, strategic direction, and strong project management. An interest in applying existing knowledge and expertise to solve complex challenges in the Mining sector is critical. As a senior leader, you will serve as a representative of our company, and play a key role in building our business and providing leadership to capital project development focusing on socioeconomic and regional development, mine closure and mine transition planning. RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Lead and/or support a wide variety of complex mining projects related to capital project development, social and environmental assessments and permitting, as well as the development of associated mine closure and mine transition management plans. Expected project delivery activities include report writing and senior review, and development of recommendations for clients.
- Provide technical expertise and manage projects related to stakeholder/Indigenous engagement and social impact assessment.
- Develop stakeholder engagement plans including compiling stakeholder registers, assessing stakeholders, and outlining tactics, strategies and activities.
- Implement on-the ground and virtual outreach programs (i.e., event planning, facilitating workshops, one-on-one meetings, interviews, open houses, etc.) to engage stakeholders, disseminate project information, respond to grievances and stakeholder feedback, and provide updates on regulatory activities and public participation opportunities.
- Prepare responses to address issues and concerns identified by stakeholders and Indigenous groups, as well as responses to frequently asked questions.
- Incorporate engagement results / inputs into technical discipline reports and ESIAs.
- Ensure the completion of substantive and accurate regulatory filing documentation for the areas of stakeholder and Indigenous engagement programs, in compliance with Federal, Provincial and local regulatory requirements.
- Provide oversight and quality control for data collection, management, reduction and analysis.
- Be accountable to ensure deliverables achieve client expectations for scope, budget, schedule, and quality.
- Remain up to date on current provincial and federal regulatory requirements relevant to industrial proponents operating in the natural resources sector in Canada.
- Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams of ERM national and global practitioners to execute projects and to deepen relationships with ERM key clients to expand ERM’s profile and market share in the global Mining market (through a combination of excellence in technical delivery and business development support).
- Mentor junior-level and mid-level consulting staff to develop their skill sets including technical skills, project experience, and general consulting and decision-making skills.
- When required, assume responsibility for project management, including task delegation and direction, subcontractor management, health & safety protocol management, monitoring of commercial performance, quality review of deliverables, and interaction with clients.
- Develop a working understanding of ERM’s other consulting service areas and actively support cross-selling these services to existing and new clients. Support the general growth and development of ERM’s global mining service areas. Coordinate with ERM offices across Canada and in the US, Asia-Pacific, Europe, and Latin America regions.
- Identify and develop new opportunities, prepare effective technical proposals, and take active leadership role in developing new business with new and existing clients.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelors in engineering, geology, science, economics, social science, public policy or related discipline; professional registration (e.g., P.Eng, P.Geo, or P.Ag.) would be an asset.
- 10+ years of relevant mining experience, including industry experience and/or stakeholder/Indigenous engagement in Canada, or related position for a mining company to understand operational needs.
- Expertise in mine closure planning, in particular the development of strategic closure goals, closure objectives and associated criteria.
- Experience supporting the environmental approval and permitting process for capital projects (i.e., new mines or expansions).
- Experience planning, organizing and implementing stakeholder engagement activities including open houses, interviews, virtual forums and feedback mechanisms.
- Experience developing and delivering presentations, trainings, and leading/facilitating discussions with small and large groups of diverse stakeholders.
- Strong knowledge of project management and experience working as part of an integrated team of consultants and engineering companies to develop pre-feasibility and feasibility level studies considered an asset.
- Experience conducting third-party reviews against industry best practices, regulatory requirements and corporate standards.
- Strong project management skills (e.g., development of work plans, budgets, schedules, and project controls).
- Well-developed teambuilding skills and demonstrated experience working with a diverse team including mentorship and/or line management of more junior staff.
- Strong commitment to safety, including following established health and safety protocols;
- Excellent writing, communication, strategic thinking, and “people” skills.
- Valid driver’s license and good driving record.
- Additional language skills (e.g., French and Spanish) are an asset.
