The Senior Analyst, Competitive Intelligence & Research will be responsible for providing ongoing industry information and relevant competitive intelligence to support various teams within our Wealth & Asset Management Canada (WAM Canada); this includes quantitative and qualitative research, financial modeling, insightful analysis on all mutual fund and ETFs products and competitors as well as M&A target firm analysis.

Reporting to the Head of Competitive Intelligence & Research, the incumbent will be a key member of the Competitive Intelligence & Research team that supports a high demand for accurate and timely business insights and reporting across WAM.

This position will require a deep understanding of the Wealth & Asset Management business, competitive landscape, products, and peers developments as well as a robust analytical and problem solving skills to efficiently draw insights from the data and researches.

Key Accountabilities

  • Gather competitive intelligence, research and analytics, analyze, interpret, and synthesize large amount of data and research materials into a concise reporting on the retail, institutional, private investment counsel industry, from a perspective of product, flows, assets, peers strategies, asset managers and distribution model.
  • Digest information from all sources to provide competitive positioning and compelling “stories” and key insights around product manufacturing, asset managers strategies, pricing, investment dealer shelf management, which can be used and re-purposed for audiences from front line sales to the executive
  • Perform head-to-head analysis on comparable competitor’s fund and highlights the gaps and opportunities.
  • Interpret financial reporting and extract relevant information from financial report and earning call as well as build modeling in excel on M&A target firms.
  • Stay current on industry developments and the impact on our WAM business and our competitors.
  • Perform deep dive analysis on a wide range of WAM topics such as investment capabilities, asset managers, dealers, potential target firm for M&A, and summarize the deep dive analysis in a consistent memo for senior executives.

Knowledge/Skills/Competencies/Education:

  • University degree in business, economics, statistics or related discipline
  • Minimum of 3 years prior experience in the mutual fund industry, preferably in an analytical role.
  • CFA level 1 would be an asset
  • Competitive intelligence or market research or analytics experience
  • Extensive Experience with research systems such as Morningstar Direct, Bloomberg, IFIC, Strategic Insights, Investor Economics, and SimFund
  • Strong understanding of the industry’s competitive landscape, as well as the different investment products available
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite with emphasis on MS Excel, more specifically modelling and dashboard creation.
  • Superior writing skill, with the ability to write a concise memo synthetizing the extensive amount of data analytics and researches as well as draw conclusion and pertinent recommendation.
  • Excellent analytical skills; detail-oriented, self-starter and thinking outside the box, results-oriented, and motivated with a can-do-attitude.
  • Able to work both independently and as part of a team in a dynamic, fast paced, demanding environment
