Reporting to the Director of Human Rights and Equity, the Sexual Violence Prevention and Education Coordinator is responsible for the implementation of Lakehead University’s sexual and gender-based violence prevention and education initiatives, including response to, and investigation of, complaints of sexual and gender-based violence. In addition, the Coordinator represents the Office of Human Rights and Equity on committees at the University and in the community.

The Coordinator receives reports and complaints of sexual and gender-based violence, connects with on and off-campus services and supports, arranges accommodations, and conducts investigations. In this role, the Coordinator possesses basic counselling skills, such as active listening and empathic response, as well as a high-degree of confidentiality and professional ethics. The Coordinator develops and delivers education and training resources and workshops for students, faculty, and staff on sexual and gender-based violence prevention and human rights promotion, including in-person and online. In this role, the Coordinator possesses a strong knowledge and understanding of sexual and gender-based violence, discrimination based on sex and gender identity and expression, and the best practices for their prevention. The Coordinator collaborates with other departments at Lakehead University as well as with community-based organizations in Thunder Bay and Orillia on initiatives to prevent and respond to sexual and gender-based violence. In this role, the Coordinator possesses a strong knowledge and understanding of on and off-campus services and supports for survivors of sexual and gender-based violence. Additional responsibilities include supporting the Office of Human Rights and Equity’s ongoing operations and programs as directed.

The successful candidate will have a university or college degree or diploma in a field that demonstrates a strong knowledge and understanding of the social and legal dimensions of sexual and gender-based violence and/or human rights. Education in an allied health field, such as counselling, social work, or nursing, preferred. In addition to education, the successful candidate will have at least two (2) years of demonstrated experience providing front-line support to persons from under-represented groups, such as women, Indigenous peoples, persons from racialized groups, persons with disabilities or persons from sexual and gender minority groups. Experience working with survivors of sexual and gender-based violence preferred. Demonstrated experience in providing one-on-one support in a social service setting, such as intake, assessment, referrals, etc., is required.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience developing and delivering education and training resources and workshops on subjects such as sexual and gender-based violence, human rights, or equity, diversity, and inclusion. Experience with online delivery, including social media, preferred. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the social and legal dimensions of sexual and gender-based violence is required, including its intersectional dimensions on race, ability, and gender identity. Knowledge and understanding of the applicable legislation and laws preferred.

The successful candidate will have strong interpersonal skills, including basic counselling skills, such as active listening, empathic response, etc., as well as facilitation and conflict resolution skills. Experience working within teams and with multiple stakeholders preferred.
