COURSE TITLE: SOSC-2001 CULTURAL ANTHROPOLOGY

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Focusing on the social science of anthropology, this course introduces students to understanding the beliefs, actions, and political, economic, and social organization of different societies. To this end, this course critically considers global case studies to analyze the concepts of identity, gender, social stratification, and development. By examining how different people advocate for social change and the associated role of the state, students will understand the extent to which people can shape their experience and position in a rapidly changing global world. Note that sections of this course may be taught by different faculty and therefore the focus may change.

COURSE TITLE: SOSC-2003 DOING HUMAN-CENTERED RESEARCH

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Students will acquire basic skills in the collection, preparation, and reporting of human-centred research. The research methods to be taught will include content analysis, ethnographic field research, interviewing, and the development of surveys and questionnaires. The course will also review a range of ways of presenting research findings. This will all be taught with a view to working with human research subjects in an ethical manner.

COURSE TITLE: SOSC-2004 BUSINESS & SOCIAL INNOVATION

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course introduces students to the world of business. It provides a sociological framework for understanding how business principles relate to creative practices. Course modules cover the fundamental concepts of business, leadership, and social innovation and allow students to gain both macro and micro perspectives of business, its role in society, and the growth of the creative economy. Students examine key aspects of organisational life in the creative economy. These include the business practices of creative individuals; leadership and managerial roles in creative organisations; and the importance of ethics and social responsibility in business.

COURSE TITLE: SOSC-2005 CULTURE AND COMMUNICATION

(Winter term: 2022-01-06 – 2022-04-06, Monday 6:30 PM – 9:30 PM, Remote Delivery)

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This lecture course is designed to offer students critical and analytical skills to understand our complex media environment through the study of the basic principles, methodologies and topics relevant to Communications Studies. Students examine historical, economic, technological and policy perspectives that shape how we respond to and participate in a media landscape, with an emphasis placed on the Canadian context. Topics to be addressed include: theories of communications and media; public and private media; communications and nations; culture industries; media convergence; geopolitics of global communications; networks and communications; democracy and media; and consumers, identity and media.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Meet regularly with the faculty on grading, course content and other matters as needed; assist in the evaluation of student work, using criteria established by the supervising faculty; work with faculty and other academic staff in support of the University’s educational goals and objectives; participate in the provision of a safe and secure environment for all members of the University community and its facilities

QUALIFICATIONS: The ideal candidate should have a graduate degree, undergraduate degree or be currently enrolled in a relevant graduate program; a demonstrated understanding of pedagogy, e.g. course preparation, teaching methods, evaluations standards, etc., English as a Second Language training is considered an asset; strong organizational, interpersonal, and oral and written communication skills; sound knowledge of, and commitment to, healthy and safe work practices; previous teaching assistance experience at the post-secondary level

HOURS OF WORK:
Hours per week are based on enrollment.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Marker/Grader TAs are hired annually on a per-course basis with fixed-term annual contracts renewable to a maximum of 3 years. These positions are subject to budgetary approval and satisfactory enrolment levels. In accordance with the MOA, one cannot hold both a Teaching Assistant and Faculty Appointment within the same semester. Marker/Grader compensation includes $27.41 per hour 6% in lieu of benefits plus vacation pay, as applicable, per the provisions of the Employment Standards Act, less statutory deductions. As mandated by the Ontario Council on Graduate Studies (OCGS), full-time graduate students may not accept Teaching Assistant or other university related employment in excess of 10 hours per week (or 130 hours per semester).
