The Land Protection division of the NS Department of Agriculture is responsible for the management and maintenance of the provincial dykeland system in four main regions under the Agricultural Marshland Conservation Act. The four regions are Colchester, Cumberland, Hants and Western: having a total of 81 marshes, 240 km of dyke and 250 aboiteau. The dykeland system protects 17,000 hectares of marsh. In addition to protecting highly productive agricultural land, the dyke system protects high value assets such as highways, communities, railway, windmills and cultural sites. This provincial dykeland system is considered critical infrastructure.

About Our Opportunity

As the Dykeland Maintenance Planner, you will schedule and implement maintenance activities for the Avon River Aboiteau and the Hants regional dykeland system on a daily, monthly and seasonal operation. Daily, you provide solutions and planning while identifying priorities and ensuring the effective protection of the dykeland system required to meet operational demands.

Primary Accountabilities

You are responsible for establishing, prioritizing and scheduling the workload of the region including:

  • Daily inspections, maintenance, and operational oversight Avon River Aboiteau;
  • Document through reports and analysis critical infrastructure maintenance.
  • maintaining the preventative maintenance schedules for the region.

Through regular contact with the Land Protection team, you ensure the efficient and effective operation and maintenance of the regional dykeland infrastructure.

Qualifications and Experience

High School completion plus five (5) years of related work experience in an equipment and repair environment. Experience as a truck mechanic or heavy equipment mechanic is considered an asset.

Knowledge of civil construction work, maintenance and repair trade practices (mechanical and electrical), and working in a tidal environment are key to this position. You must have computer skills including proficiency in working with Microsoft Office Suite.

Experience with the following are considered assets:

First responder or EMO training (example fire fighting, rescue)

Heavy duty mechanic, mechanical background, and or agricultural experience.

As the ideal candidate, you are efficient at coordinating work; organizing, planning, and scheduling the daily operations of our fast-paced environment. Your effective communication skills, both oral and written, are essential for collaborating with Department and representatives (for example contractors and consultants). You use sound judgement and problem-solving skills when determining and establishing client service delivery targets. Consistently, you maintain a professional and courteous disposition and hold a high standard for client and customer service.

We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

Working Conditions

Must live within a 20 minute response time to the structure.

Work is performed in a regional location with tidal conditions exposed to occasional; water, mud, and machinery noise.

Pay Grade: MOS 18

Salary Range: $2,200.06 – $2,270.22 Bi-Weekly
