JOB DESCRIPTION
ROLE OVERVIEW
Reporting to the President and Founder, the Director Marketing and Communications, leads strategy-driven planning, development, and excellent execution of the company’s communications. With diverse stakeholders and audiences as well as diverse messaging that encompasses research, knowledge translation and messaging, the Director also works closely with the Marketing and Communications Team. The Director, Marketing and Communications will leverage knowledge and experience in leading plans that align key messages with strategic goals and accomplishments. Working closely with subject matter experts, the Director brings thought leadership in design and delivery of significant announcements for both traditional and digital media in a way that promotes all aspects of the company’s mission and strategy.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Strategic Marketing & Communications:
- Working with the Marketing and Communications Team, identifies and articulates the value journey, and ensures it is reflected on/supported by the company’s website, in communications plans, social media channels and other marketing assets.
- Supervise the Communication and Marketing Coordinator and the Graphic Designer.
- Recommends, develops and executes marketing communications plans that generate/nurture membership/participant leads, build brand awareness and understanding and member/participant education/retention.
- Proven ability to write, edit and produce on a consistent basis, highly effective customer-focused marketing messages.
- Liaises with external agencies in development of offline and online tactical marketing communications.
- Using Google Analytics, MailChimp, and social media analytics, continually monitors, analyzes, and evaluates success (results and statistics, tracking, and determines what improvements need to be made) to campaign changes, budget reallocations, new approaches, revised targeting, etc.
- Oversee and implement the communications strategy for the organization and other projects as necessary. These should include working with web, social media, e-list services and distributions and traditional media to position the organization with a strong voice.
- Strategic development of long-term and annual business plan communications based on:
o Proactively consults with stakeholders (Committee input and the organization’s Executive) to identify needs, gaps, and the best opportunities to contribute towards the organization’s strategic objectives.
o Research on other programs and awareness campaigns.
o Marketing requirements for planned third party and potential ad hoc fundraising opportunities.
o Media relations plans and activities including preparing and training others for media releases and public announcements;
o President or Executive external communications messages.
o Key partnerships with consulting groups, Foundations, other not-for-profits and corporate sponsors.
o Brand integrity in all the organization print, digital and other materials for all audiences.
o Vendor relationships aligned with strategic communications needs including both quality and cost effectiveness.
Public Relations and Media:
- Lead media relations plans including:
o Managing media inquiries as spokesperson, through delegation or cultivating and identifying spokespeople across the organization
o Overseeing media releases which may include researching, writing and editing; or, editing releases developed by others and liaising with external agencies regarding distribution.
o Cultivating and maintaining relationships with key industry journalists on a local, national and international basis.
o Oversee research material for media inquiries, quotes and articles on behalf of senior management, and writing/editing articles for external publications.
o Manage meaningful reporting on communications and media effectiveness via established or new metrics and tools.
o Monitors, listens and cultivates online community engagement.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
Education
- A University degree in communications or closely related discipline (Business, Marketing, Communications, PR) or equivalent combination of education and work experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Perfectly bilingual, oral and written (French, English)
- Ability to exercise mature judgment, tact and diplomacy
- Ability to work in a highly demanding and fast-paced environment
- Excellent computer skills, including proficiency in advanced features of MS Office (Teams, Outlook, Word, Excel, Powerpoint)
- Advanced skills in social media platforms (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube), protocols and strategy
- Knowledge of MailChimp automated marketing
- Demonstrated ability to plan and think strategically
- Strong organizational, multi-tasking and project management skills
- Strong interpersonal, networking and relationship management skills
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
- Ability to develop and manage a budget, track budget utilization on a regular basis and provide forecasts to senior management for decision-making purposes
Experience
- 7+ years of experience preferably in a non-profit or association setting
