Job description: The Department of Psychiatry is a clinical academic department within the Faculty of Medicine that provides high-caliber psychiatric education to residents, fellows, medical and graduate students, and mental health professionals. Members of the department provide expert secondary and tertiary mental health care to the people of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island within the mental health programs at Nova Scotia Health and IWK Health. The department boasts a very strong research program and collaborates with researchers anywhere from across the street to around the world.

The Department is seeking a Director of Administration who will also serve as Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the Department’s Academic Funding Plan contract. As a senior member of the Department Head’s leadership team and reporting to the Department Head, the Director of Administration and Chief Operating Officer (COO) provides strategic and operational direction for the overall management of the Department and support of its strategic vision.
Key Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership, stewardship and strategic oversight to the full range of operations including finance, administration, research, education, policy, planning, governance, human resources, performance/accountability, administrative space planning, IT, and communications.
  • Provide financial expertise, analysis, leadership, administration and management of the Department’s annual operating budget including management of physician compensation, academic supports, and Academic Psychiatry Inc financial resources.
  • Manage the Department Academic Funding Plan and the Department Practice Plan.
  • As a strategic advisor, work with the Department’s global strategic plan to ensure that units’ individual plans are built upon a shared mission with all programs and stakeholders, and that strategic initiatives are aligned and coordinated with financial resources.
  • Lead, manage, coach and mentor direct reports and, indirectly, the staff within the Department. Oversee short- and long-term human resource objectives.
  • Lead administrative best practices, quality improvement and renewal of administrative processes to meet the needs of the Department.

Note

Due to operational requirements, the successful candidate will work on campus and will be required to provide proof of vaccination.
Qualifications

Graduate degree in Business, Public or Health Administration with a professional accounting designation (CPA) and seven to ten years of experience in senior administration and management in a complex decentralized public sector organization (preferably in an academic health care field), or an equivalent combination of education and experience, is required. Demonstrated competency in financial management and budget preparation with excellent analytical skills are required. Human resource management and supervisory experience are required, preferably in a unionized environment. Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential.
