Job title: Director of Finance & Administration

Job description: Canadian Stage, one of Canada’s leading professional non-profit theatres, is searching for a full time
Director of Finance and Administration to join our team.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Finance and Administration guides Canadian Stage’s
financial policy and direction while also being an active partner with the senior leadership team in
planning the organization’s future strategy, implementing ongoing operations, and enhancing CS’
commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.

The successful candidate will lead all financial administration, business planning, budgeting, and human
resource administration. The Director of Finance and Administration collaborates closely with peers on the
senior leadership team, including the Director of Production, Director of Marketing & Communications,
Director of Development, and Producer, as well as the Board Treasurer and Finance and Audit
Committee. At this time, the Director of Finance and Administration directly oversees 3 FTE member
finance and administration team. Pre-pandemic, Canadian Stage’s annual operating budget ranged from
$7M to $9M, subject to programming cycles.
This position full-time salaried, with a competitive salary and benefits.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Guide financial decisions by establishing, monitoring, and enforcing internal controls, and

operational policies and procedures; make recommendations for increased efficiency and
effectiveness.

  • With the Executive Director and senior management, develops and implements the annual

operating budgets and 5-year budget outlooks, monitors performance against budget, with
regular variance reporting.

  • Coordinate and direct daily and periodic accounting operations and processes, assuring that

financial records and systems are maintained in accordance with Generally Accepted
Accounting Principles.

  • Participate in the strategic planning process as an integral member of the senior leadership

team through development and use of predictive models and activity-based financial
analyses.

  • Cultivates an organizational culture of shared financial management, develops tools for

forecasting and scenario planning, brings financial perspective to strategic decisions.

  • Perform cash flow analysis and planning to ensure availability of funds as needed
  • Maximize return and limit risk on cash by managing bank balances, and overseeing

investments

  • Supervise general accounting duties including A/P, A/R, G/L analysis
  • Monitor and confirm financial condition by conducting internal audits
  • Lead communication with external auditors and supervise the annual audited financial

statements and annual returns

  • Prepare accurate interim financial statements and special reports for both internal and

external use, through collection, analysis, and consolidation of financial data

  • Prepare annual operating and capital budgets and quarterly re-forecasts.
  • Achieve budget objectives by scheduling expenditures, analyzing variances, and initiating

corrective actions

  • Liaise with the Finance Committee and participate in Committee and Board meetings
  • Manage reporting on government grants as required
  • Direct human resources functions, including recruitment, hiring, termination, and

development and management of employment policies

  • Work closely with hiring managers to ensure consistent application of human resource

policies and best practices

  • Ensure compliance with federal, provincial, and local requirements, through research and

awareness of existing, new, or anticipated legislation, and liaise with legal counsel to advise
management on needed actions or potential impacts

  • Ensure effective management and support of internal information systems including

telephone system, telecom providers, computer hardware and software, and all network
infrastructures

Requirements: Qualifications
Education: Professional Accounting Designation (CPA)
Related Experience: Minimum 5 years of financial reporting experience

  • Strong customer service orientation
  • Project management skills
  • Effective communications skills with the ability to clearly and concisely articulate ideas, concepts and proposals
  • Advance Excel skills for budgeting and project cost reporting
  • Experience with Netsuite or other ERP for accounting is an asset
  • Familiarity with MS Sharepoint and Teams is an asset
