Toronto Public Library (TPL) invites applicants with extensive experience in the areas of environmental conservation and sustainability to fill the role of TPL’s 2021 Environmentalists in Residence (EnvIR) for the Summer/Fall.

This residency is fully funded by the TD Friends of the Environment Foundation (TD FEF).
The EnvIR supports the program series at TPL and will serve as an industry expert in the specified focus areas. Areas of focus may include but are not limited to, local wildlife protection, pollinator gardens, food security, Indigenous environmental rights, circular economy, representation in environmental activism. The EnvIR will lead engaging programs*, hands-on workshops* and offer consultations virtually/in-person. The residency will also include a community project related to enhancing public environmental space or food security to be completed by the end of 2021.
*Activities whether virtual or in-person will depend Toronto Public Health safety guidelines.
The EnvIR supports the library’s strategic priorities of:
- Torontonians have continuous, lifelong and self-directed learning opportunities to develop multiple literacies that support health, education, employment and entrepreneurship, and enhance their quality of life.
- Focus on equity: Closing the gap for those who are least able to access the opportunities provided by the knowledge economy; Actively breaking down barriers to information, information literacy and platforms for expression.
- Enhancement of public environmental space to support food security, local pollinators, or native plants.
Qualifications:
- An industry expert with a minimum of 3 years of professional expertise in the area of conservation and/or sustainability;
- Experience as a community activator with a proven track record in community engagement and raising awareness in professional area of expertise
- Experience with delivering programs and workshops to audiences of varying knowledge and skill levels
- Excellent communication skills in coaching, teaching and public speaking
- A commitment to supporting Toronto’s Live Green and TransformTO initiatives through education and inspiration and community mobilization
- Use of online programming platforms or virtual events
- Use of social media in a business setting
The EnvIR will have the following core responsibilities:
- Create and deliver programs and workshops, along with support materials, related to their area of expertise
- Meet with library users and community groups through appointments to consult on environmental engagement and environmental mobilization
Target Audience:
Torontonians who may or may not have knowledge of environmental issues, but are looking to be inspired, increase their environmental awareness and knowledge, and learn how they can participate and mobilize their community to support the environment.
Requirements of the Residency:
- A 10-week residency; 14 hours a week; flexible work schedule (140 hours total)
- Attend an orientation and planning session in advance of the residency (time spend at this orientation is in advance of the scheduled 10-week residency). The hours spent at the orientation are part of the total 140 hours.
- All consultation sessions to take place virtually or via phone as arranged by TPL
- Minimum of 10 programs (workshops or lectures) during residency – Structure and format (e.g. length) to be discussed with library staff-
- Involvement with a community project related to enhancing public environmental space or food security to be completed by the end of 2021.
- Develop and deliver one training session or one resource material related to your area of expertise
Remuneration: $7,000 for residency
Location: The EnvIR (Summer/Fall) will be based online from August 30 to November 5, 2021 (10 weeks). There will be an opportunity to work with the surrounding neighbourhood branches to deliver programs.
The library will provide program space, supporting program materials and the support of library staff in program promotion, scheduling meetings and planning programs.

- Curriculum Vitae – Include a summary of how you meet the qualifications listed above, which should include, but may not be limited to: relevant education, related work with community organizations, workshop/teaching experience, recently published papers/lectures, and links to website and social media presence.
- Program Proposal – Outline your idea for at least 2 programs (e.g. workshop, lecture, meetup, etc.). A maximum of 2 pages.
- Reference letters – A minimum of 2 relevant references.
Note: The successful candidate will be required to complete a Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC). The cost for the VSC is paid for by the Resident.
