Job title: Manager, Finance and Administration

Job description: Dalhousie University’s Office of Advancement is responsible for all fundraising and alumni engagement activities at the institution. A team of over 90 advancement professionals cultivates relationships with alumni and friends of the university and works with donors to help them achieve personal fulfilment through philanthropic investment. Dalhousie donors commit in aggregate over $50 million each year in the interest of supporting student success, scientific research, and community impact. Reporting to the Chief of Staff and Executive Director, Administration, the Manager of Finance & Administration oversees a broad and complex financial and administrative portfolio, including financial planning, budgeting, risk management, and infrastructure. The Manager provides strategic leadership and advice, management and oversight of all financial matters related to unit budgets, revenues and expenditures, and campaign finances.
Key Responsibilities

  • Provides the Advancement Leadership Team (ALT) with strategic leadership and advice based on financial analysis and projections, cost identification and allocation, and revenue/expense analysis.
  • Prepares annual budgets and related monitoring of 60+ cost centres including operating, trust, and endowment accounts; prepares internal monthly financial statements.
  • Negotiates contracts with vendors, service providers, suppliers, and partners on behalf of the Office of Advancement.
  • Oversees the effectiveness of the Office of Advancement’s internal financial control and risk management systems, and financial and other reporting processes, ensuring compliance with legal, regulatory, and policy requirements.
  • Directly supervises the Financial Administrator and provides financial advice and guidance to managers, administrators, and support staff within the Office of Advancement.
  • Responsible for and oversees all services, policies, and procedures required to administratively operate the Office of Advancement efficiently and effectively, including space planning, central procurement policies, building maintenance, Environmental Health & Safety, etc. Acts as a key resource to ALT and Advancement staff in these areas, providing informed and innovative solutions.

Qualifications

Undergraduate degree and a professional accounting designation plus a minimum of five years’ progressively responsible experience in financial management and risk management (or equivalent combination of training and experience) is required. A master’s degree would be highly preferred. Demonstrated financial acumen is required, with significant experience in large and complex organizations. The ability to work with senior level management in a trusted advisory role is key, as well as the diverse constituents across the University. The successful candidate will have the ability to think strategically and analytically, assess risks, streamline systems, transform a strategic vision into an operational model, and move projects from conception to completion. Strong interpersonal skills are required with a high degree of sensitivity, tact, and diplomacy.
