Job description: This position reports to the Team Leader, Natural Areas and is responsible for oversight of crews primarily conducting outdoor cleanup operations and other Natural Areas work. This Crew Leader position is responsible for ensuring that the delivery of work through the work plan meets the needs of the Open Space Operations Section and the citizens of Edmonton.

Primary responsibility of this position will be supervising Natural Areas field crews who will be cleaning abandoned encampments and sanitation work in downtown Edmonton as well as performing natural area maintenance, refuse collection, needle collection, site inspections, mechanical weed removal, snow removal and pruning. The position will be responsible for leading crews that work City-wide and are required to perform in a variety of environments. The incumbent will work closely with Park Rangers and Edmonton Police Service.

Some key responsibilities will include:

  • Provide oversight, direction and hands-on leadership at the field level to deliver approved work plans which include but are not limited to: completing task cards, setting daily priorities and implementing work plans to existing standards; assessing needs and resources to perform tasks; scheduling weekly/seasonal staff, ensuring work is done following current policies and procedures; investigating complaints; preparing estimates or work completion and progress of various sites; ensuring up to date certification of staff; assisting in job interviews, screening applicants and conducting seasonal evaluations of staff and work
  • Train staff on the proper/safe use of equipment, review and continually assess required updates to Standard Operating Procedures and hazard assessments, continually assess training needs, recommend changes in regards to training, assist in the mentoring and orientation of staff, ensure staff are up to date with best practices, provide safety instruction as necessary, ensure safety programs and information are disseminated, conduct accident investigations both personal and equipment related as required, process all documentation in regards to safety in a timely fashion (WCB forms, incident investigation forms, near miss forms etc)
  • Maintain effective working relationships with the public, city departments and outside organizations in order to deal with on-site customer needs and park/facility operation and facility requirements
  • Provide input into the annual budget process, monthly budget variance reporting processes; provide input information estimates for projects; assists in the analysis and interpretation of management and financial data and reports
  • Request supplies to support operational needs
  • Update outdoor encampment cleanup data requirements daily, including ensuring field staff are updating electronic data daily
  • Coordinate and supporting the 311 Needle collection and Public needle collection box programs
  • Monitor natural areas for hazards such as damaged trees, fire risk, illegal dumping etc.
  • Assist the Supervisor and Team Leader in planning for upcoming seasons, this includes staffing requirements, preparing a draft plan for areas to carry out work plans, identifying priority areas for work to take place, liasoning with Parks Rangers and EPS to prioritize cleanup efforts
  • Plan for upcoming projects, this includes ensuring proper staffing and equipment are available
  • Perform other related duties as required

Qualifications

  • 2 year diploma in Natural Areas Management, Environmental Sciences, or a related field
  • Minimum of 3 years experience outdoor encampment cleanup or park maintenance, including 1 year in a supervisory role
  • Equipment operating experience and certifications considered an asset
  • Chainsaw and Chipper training considered an asset
  • Toolcat and skid steer training would be considered an asset
  • Knowledge of CoE hiring practices and staff performance policies and procedures in a union environment
  • Knowledge of trail maintenance requirements and local site knowledge
  • Knowledge of Response to outdoor camp residents on Public Land process and outdoor camp cleanup requirements (including safety requirements)
  • Experience dealing with difficult people and situations
  • Adaptable to changing priorities, whether because of managerial direction or weather dependency
  • Demonstrate effective written, verbal and technical skills for team development, customer service and effective delivery of approved services
  • Proficiency with SAP, SLIM, Microsoft Office and Google suite of programs
  • Proficiency with ARG GIS Collector and Quick Capture Applications as well as the EPI Collect application
