Job description: Position Overview
The Office of VP Research – Administration is currently seeking a Full-time Limited Term Senior Specialist, Quantum City Marketing & Communications for approximately 5 years, (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.
The University of Calgary (UCalgary) is creating a vibrant quantum economic and scientific hub based in Calgary – Quantum City – leveraging the leading quantum science and technology programs of Campus Alberta institutions and a burgeoning UCalgary innovation ecosystem. The Senior Specialist, Quantum City Marketing & Communications reports to the Director, Quantum City Business Development. The position works closely with the Scientific Director, Quantum City and the Managing Director, Quantum City, as well as other Campus Communicators to promote the Quantum City initiatives.
This is a full-time AUPE position. Hours of work are normally 8:30 am – 4:30 pm although some evening hours and flexibility may be required.
This role will lead the development and implementation of the communications and marketing plan for Quantum City and will have a strong focus on strengthening and aligning all aspects of communications, marketing and reputation management with the strategic direction of Quantum City. The Senior Specialist, Marketing & Communications will lead initiatives and support a collaborative culture within the Quantum City initiative and with a wide range of stakeholders.
The Senior Specialist, Marketing & Communications is responsible for the ongoing development, implementation and coordination of marketing and communications programs to improve the profile and levels of engagement with key stakeholders. The incumbent is also responsible for the tracking and evaluation of these programs. The Senior Specialist, Marketing & Communications will provide leadership and guidance to Marketing & Communications staff.
The Senior Specialist, Marketing and Communications is responsible for working with leaders to identify marketing and communications objectives to support Quantum City’s agendas in business development, talent generation and innovation, and to deliver communications and marketing plans and programs to achieve those objectives, including elements of brand management, marketing, media relations, website content, special events and external as well as internal communications.
Position Description
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
While this position needs to work collaboratively in a team environment, the Senior Specialist is also expected to be able to take proactive steps to resolve conflicts or issues as required.
Strategic Planning/Leadership:
- Leads development and implementation of high-quality and timely communication and marketing plans that are comprehensive and robust by identifying audiences, communications channels, key messages, and tactics
- Plans and implements a broad range of publications, events, and other communication tools
- Ensure communication strategies promote a positive image and reputation for Quantum City
- Provides strategic advice to senior leaders within Quantum City on events, communications, and marketing
- Identify new opportunities to meet Quantum City’s priorities in ecosystem building
- Acts as a supervisor for co-op students providing daily coaching, mentoring and direction, when required
Marketing and Communications:
- Leads development and implementation of high-quality and timely communication and marketing content and plans with ideas, creativity, enthusiasm and insight, provides status reports and evaluates performance
- Develops content for a wide range of initiatives including documentation to support Quantum City’s strategy and priorities (e.g. proposal for industry, government grants, etc.)
- Manage and create web content to engage target audiences
- Reviews and edits key Quantum City documentation for consistency of messaging
- Provides effective communications and marketing advice and support to faculty and staff members on key Quantum City issues and initiatives
- Produces high-quality communications materials, including slide decks, reports, speaking notes, proposals, etc.
- Provides effective communications support and counsel to senior leaders within Quantum City
- Proactively seeks out research stories and shares them with external and internal audiences, through news releases, internal articles and announcements
- Works professionally and collaboratively with other university communicators, as well as members of the University Relations and Development teams; ensuring alignment of initiatives and communication protocols
- Ensures communications are accurate, timely, informative, professional
- Manages complex Research issues and challenging interpersonal interactions with composure and diplomacy
Event Programming & Management:
- Develop, enhance and implement industry engagement programs and events to build relationships with key partners, in order to enhance the recognition and reputation of Quantum City
- Manage event program development (content), implementation (logistics), evaluation and reporting
Qualifications / Requirements:
- A post-secondary degree in business, marketing, communications or a related field, or equivalent work experience
- Minimum of five to seven years experience in marketing and communications
- Experience planning and executing marketing and communications programs to achieve conversion and business goals while maintaining consistent brand
- Experience creating high-impact, engaging content, including video, for social and digital channels
- Demonstrated experience in strategic communications and marketing planning and implementation
- Ability to translate complex content and information concepts into clear, concise and impactful communications; experience writing for all mediums including print, web, social and digital
- Proven success managing complex projects
- Strong working knowledge of MS Office applications
- Excellent communication (both verbal and written) and listening skills; sound judgement with exceptional ability to prioritize and meet deadlines
- High level of problem solving and interpersonal skills, including strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to work under pressure and on varying projects simultaneously
- Proven ability to use discretion with confidential material; a high level of tact, diplomacy, professionalism and a strong work ethic are required
- Ability to work independently but also collaboratively with others on and off-campus, at all levels within and outside the organization
- Experience in events planning, including communications, public relations, media, and outreach events
- Strong understanding of web, email, and social media marketing and how to leverage related tools to strategic advantage
- Ability to learn and effectively use software and web-based tools such as Drupal, Marketo, Eventbrite, Photoshop and others as required
