Course Number and Title: POL 340H1 F – International Law: Foundations

Course description: This course will introduce students to the primary sources of international law (treaties and customary international law) and the legal attributes of the core actors in the international system, including states, international organizations and individuals. Related topics will include governance of territory and the seas.

Estimated TA support: TA support will be provided to the full course at roughly 110 hours marking TA.

Estimated course enrollment: 150

Class schedule: Monday 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.

  • This course is scheduled to be delivered in-person. Please note that, in keeping with current circumstances, this course may be delivered in-person, remotely/online, or by a combination of delivery methods as determined by the Faculty or Department at a later date.

Sessional dates of appointment: September 1, 2021 – December 31, 2021

Salary:
Sessional Lecturers I – $8,489.67

Sessional Lecturers I (Long Term) – $8,869.25

Sessional Lecturers II – $9,085.58

Sessional Lecturers III – $9,301.90

Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.

Qualifications:

  • JD or Master of Laws is required.
  • Academic training in both the fields of law and politics is required.
  • Teaching experience at the university level is required.
  • Demonstrated experience in matters of international law, constitutional law, human rights, transitional justice and matters relating to aboriginal peoples preferred.
  • Demonstrated evidence of excellence in undergraduate teaching and mastery of the subject area is preferred.
  • Previous experience in teaching a similar course is preferred.

Description of duties:

  • Preparation of course syllabus and course marking scheme
  • Planning and teaching weekly lectures
  • Setting and marking assignments/tests/exams and course administration in accordance with University regulations as described in the Faculty of Arts & Science Academic Handbook for Instructors
  • Submission of grades
  • Available for office hours for academic counselling of students
  • Dealing with student enquiries, appeals and petitions
  • Supervising and training TAs
