is a national non-profit organization based in Waterloo, Ontario, dedicated to the conservation and use of biodiversity in seeds, plants, and pollinators.
We are seeking two students to help facilitate and grow our School Food Garden program in the Kitchener, Waterloo, and Cambridge area and beyond. See the website for background about our program.
The positions are 8 weeks for 35 hours per week paid at $17.50/hour.
Job responsibilities will vary depending on COVID restrictions, and will involve a mix of remote work and in-person work where possible.
Potential work tasks and learning opportunities include:
- Developing our social media, website, and electronic educational resources. Experience in online communications, video editing, blog writing are assets. Knowledge of food and nutrition are also important.
- Improving our online teaching materials for kids, school, and family gardening. Prior experience with garden care is useful, but not required.
- Connecting with youth through our volunteer programs and facilitating participation in our youth blog and other volunteer positions
- Helping with our School Food Farmers Market, including, planning, advertising, harvesting, working market days and volunteer coordination
- Summer maintenance of community/school garden plots, and building new school gardens with our grant winners for use in the fall when schools re-open. Experience in gardening and light outdoor work are assets, but we will also provide training and learning opportunities.
- Since this position is supported by the Canada Summer Jobs program, applicants must be between the ages of 15 and 30 years.
Note re Covid-19: Job duties, training, and supplied personal protective equipment will conform to the precautions recommended by Waterloo Region Public Health, and may be adapted throughout the summer as workplace standards evolve. All positions can be adapted to work-at-home if necessary, but will require some amount of interaction with co-workers and travel to local schools and community gardens.
