Your opportunity:

As Payroll and Finance Officer you will be responsible for the majority of the human resources administration and payroll functions within the Department of Chemical Engineering & Applied Chemistry. You will deal with avariety of faculty, staff, and students and are keen to recommend opportunities to streamline our processes. Working under the general direction of the Director, Administration and Finance, you will also assist in the financial operations of our unit, including financial processing and reporting.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Acting as the first point of contact for payroll related enquiries
  • Entering salary and/or personnel information in HRIS
  • Processing payroll; Following administrative rules and procedural instructions
  • Verifying that personnel transactions are processed according to applicable policies, procedures, collective agreements and applicable legislated requirements
  • Collecting supporting documentation required for payroll and/or HRIS processing
  • Liaising with internal contacts to resolve accounting, payroll and/or HRIS processing issues
  • Gathering information in preparation for budget planning
  • Preparing financial summary reports
  • Reconciling accounts
  • Analyzing administrative processes and procedures and recommending changes for improvement
  • Informing senior staff of impending deadlines
  • Handling sensitive and/or confidential information

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
  • Minimum five years of relevant payroll and financial experience
  • Knowledge and experience working with the University’s HR rules, guidelines and procedures, as well as payroll principles, and recent experience in applying it
  • Experience identifying and resolving individual payroll discrepancies
  • Demonstrated experience in working withdeveloping, maintaining and analyzing reports
  • Advanced skills with MS Office (e.g. Excel and Word) and database management
  • Advanced knowledge of financial and human resource software systems such as SAP (HRIS, FIS, RIS) or comparable applications combined with a thorough knowledge of general office systems and procedures
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills with the ability to explain financial concepts
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a superior customer service orientation and ability to deal
  • Excellent organizational skills to maintain accurate records and information systems
  • Multi-tasking ability, ability to organize and oversee a high volume of paperwork
  • Demonstrated ability to apply knowledge of accounting principles
  • Ability to take the initiative and respond to change
  • Highly attentive to detail and accuracy
