About the role

Canadian Blood Services is looking for a Regular Full-Time Director, Strategy Management to join our dynamic People, Culture and Performance team. The work of a Director, Strategy Management is integral to Canadian Blood Services’ role as Canada’s Lifeline. In this role, you will provide oversight over all processes related to corporate strategy development and management, as well as over see our integrated business planning process. You will provide thought leadership and work collaboratively at senior levels of the organization, supporting the Vice President – People, Culture and Performance, the CEO, other members of the Executive Management Team, other senior management and the Board of Directors in executing the corporate strategy, and ensuring integration and alignment of strategy across the organization. Maintaining a high performing team and leading through relationships with the “big picture” in mind are essential to success.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Design, maintain, and continuously improve a robust, effective, and efficient end-to-end strategy management process – from horizon scanning to the deployment of impactful strategic initiatives, via a closely integrated relationship with the Enterprise program and project management office (EPMO).
  • Leads and matures the internal foresight function and fosters understanding of the political, economic, social, technological, medical, scientific, environmental, and legal developments or predicted developments relevant to CBS.
  • Leads our international collaboration function, serving as the Alliance of Blood Operators (ABO) point of contact, and ensuring our effective involvement in ABO activities, communities of practice and benchmarking groups.
  • Leads the design, development and publication of the corporate strategic plan and offers advice on when and how the corporate strategy needs refreshing or change.
  • Determines the strategy design and planning methodologies and tools used by CBS, with an emphasis on the “Strategy by Design” and Balanced Scorecard methodologies.
  • Ensures the corporate strategy is converted into corporate goals, performance measures and initiatives to support achieving the ambitions in the strategic plan and being accountable for monitoring its progress.
  • Designs, communicates, and continuously improves the corporate strategy reporting process, including preparation for Executive Business Reviews, strategy reviews, the CEO Report to the Board, and semi-annual corporate performance reports and presentations.
  • Deliver, as required, projects to bring strategic clarity to business lines, product lines, functions, or divisions. These could include benchmarking efforts, market studies, clarifying strategic direction and developing roadmaps.
  • Acts as accountable process owner, and thought leader, for the organization’s Integrated Business Planning Process.
  • Plans and delivers quarterly Executive Business Reviews.
  • Establishes objectives, priorities, goals, and standards for team and manages their progress and performance and develops them accordingly.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • A university degree in Business Administration, Health Administration, Public Health, or related field is an asset, but not required.
  • Experience in strategy development, strategy planning, balanced scorecard, and objectives and key results (OKR) is an asset.
  • Subject matter expertise in strategy management approaches and systems is important, as is any related certifications in this area.
  • General management experience – leading teams, large initiatives and achieving measurable results, is an asset.

  • Designs comprehensive and realistic plans using strategic goals.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills in English.
  • Strong presentation and facilitation skills.
  • Sound knowledge of strategy management, strategy execution, enterprise performance management, enterprise risk management, portfolio management, change management/execution, and project planning.
  • Ability to build and maintain a high commitment and high-performance team.
