The Executive Legal Officer, Court Administration reports to the Director of Court Services. In addition to the tasks and responsibilities assigned by the Director, the incumbent works in tandem with the Executive Legal Officer, Office of the Chief Justice, to carry out assignments and responsibilities tasked by the judiciary.
The incumbent acts as legal counsel to the Director of Court Services, the Registrar of the Nunavut Court of Justice (NCJ), the Clerk of the Court and the Sheriff. The position is an in-house counsel who will do legal research, draft memorandums of law, and draft policies on issues related to court administration and the administration of justice in general. The Executive Legal Officer, Court Administration reviews filings with the NCJ to ensure compliance with the Rules of Court and Practice Directives. Additionally, this position provides legal opinions, mentorship, training and support to the court registries and Sheriff’s Office. The incumbent reviews file construction within the Registry and ensures files are being created in a manner that is consistent, efficient and organized to suit the desires of the Judiciary and maintain an accurate Court record.
The successful candidate must be legally authorized to practice law in Nunavut. Therefore, an applicant must have a Common Law degree from a recognized Canadian university and either be a regular member of the Law Society of Nunavut or be a member of a Provincial or Territorial Bar for at least five (5) years, including a minimum of three (3) years of civil law practice experience. The Incumbent must have experience in developing policies and conducting legal research on various databases (e.g. Quicklaw, Westlaw). This is a Position of Trust and a satisfactory Criminal Record Check is required.
Knowledge of and experience in: the laws of Canada and Nunavut; Criminal and Family Law, Inuit and/ or northern social and legal issues; and/or Court policies and operations would be considered assets.
The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any of the official languages of Nunavut. Fluency in more than one of Nunavut’s official languages would be considered an asset. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land, Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are also considered assets.
