Job description: Your Opportunity:

Within the University of Alberta Hospital is the Critical Care Program that consists of the General Systems Intensive Care Unit (GSICU) and Burn Unit. The GSICU is a Level 1 Trauma Center and Transplant Center for Edmonton, Northern AB, SK, Northern BC, and the Canadian North. Registered Nurses within the GSICU provide care to critically ill patients with life threatening or potentially life threatening conditions, typically involving one or more organ system failures, including renal failure. RN’s in the GSICU are trained to provide hemodialysis and/or Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT) and cover the Walter McKenzie Center site for Code Blue and Medical Emergency Team (MET). In addition, RN’s from this unit provide support to patients requiring specialized isolation (Ebola) in the Specialized Isolation Unit (SIU). The Burn Unit is American Burn Association (ABA) certified and Registered Nurses in this unit provide care to patients requiring critical care, with large burns or complex wounds requiring intensive care level monitoring, extensive dressing changes and specialized rehabilitation and wound care management. Pediatric patients with small burns not requiring critical care management or intubation are also cared for in the Burn Unit. If required, you will receive the AHS Critical Care Orientation (OPACCA) training, providing you with the knowledge, tools, and resources to confidently care for your patients. There is an opportunity to be trained and work in both the Burns and GSICU units. In these units, you will be responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care. Working as part of the multidisciplinary team, you will collaborate for positive patient outcomes and provide quality care and life support to critically ill patients with serious, life-threatening illnesses.

As a Registered Nurse (RN), you will provide a wide variety of nursing services to patients, families, communities and populations, while taking necessary steps to ensure their safety and well-being. In your role, you will utilize nursing processes, through critical thinking, problem solving and decision making, as well as teach, counsel and advocate on behalf of patients and their families. You will play a leadership role in supporting an integrated and holistic approach to patient care, health promotion and maintenance. You will provide safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support – Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP). Additional Required Qualifications:

Completion of a recognized Critical Care Certification or OPACCA orientation and 4 years of current critical care experience. You may be required to successfully complete the Alberta Health Services Critical Care Challenge Exam (this will be determined upon at interview dependent on your Critical Care experience). Demonstrated excellent assessment, documentation, clinical, organizational and patient care skills and proficient at medication administration calculations. Ability to communicate findings in a concise and accurate manner. Strong interpersonal, stress management, conflict management and problem solving skills. Must be able to identify own learning needs and seek guidance in professional practice where knowledge deficit occurs. Alberta Health Services reserves the ability to hire individuals with less experience or education. Current certifications in Level 1 (Cytotoxic Medication Administration, Direct IV, Drug Calculations, Femoral Sheath, Intraspinal & Regional Nerve Block, Neuromuscular Blocking Agents, and Peripheral IV Initiation) and Level II (Advanced Hemodynamics & PA Catheters, Code Blue, Emergency Cardiac Management, EVD & Tranvenous Pacemaker). Preferred Qualifications:

Canadian Association of Critical Care Nurses (CACCN). Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), Advanced Burn Life Support (ABLS), Canadian Nurses Association (CNA), International Trauma Life Support (ITLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP). Wound Care Experience and/or Certification. Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC). Previous OBS/Cardiac/Pediatric experience. Code and MET team experience. Intermittent Hemodialysis and CRRT experience.
